As a lifelong cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema, I must say that Quentin Tarantino’s praises for Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux have piqued my curiosity. Having seen both Pulp Fiction and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood under the same roof, I can appreciate Tarantino’s knack for spotting unique cinematic brilliance.
Quentin Tarantino speaks highly of Todd Phillips’ newest movie, Joker: Folie à Deux. On a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis podcast, the renowned director expressed his deep admiration for the sequel to the 2019 film, Joker.
In simpler terms, Todd Phillips, the director known for Pulp Fiction, has declared that his upcoming film about the Joker character is indeed what it claims to be. In other words, he considers himself to be associated with the role of the Joker in this production.
He went on to explain that Phillips has been using the studio’s funds in much the same way as the Joker spends his money. He also pointed out, “His grand surprise – a chuckle here! – was the jack-in-the-box, where he extends his hand for a handshake and instead gives you a buzzer delivering 10,000 volts. This is comparable to comic book enthusiasts.
Quentin Tarantino emphasized that the film was deliberately crafted to provoke reactions ranging from dissatisfaction among avid superhero fans, die-hard enthusiasts, and perhaps even the studio itself.
In simpler terms, the director of “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” expressed his frustration by essentially telling the movie audience, Hollywood, and anyone owning stocks at DC and Warner Brothers that he doesn’t care about their opinions or expectations.
In the podcast, the filmmaker shared his initial surprise at how much he ended up liking the movie.
In discussing the initial entry, Tarantino expressed that the film primarily revolved around the talk show segment, which he deemed exceptional, stating it as one of the finest produced within the past “two decades” and “the current century.
He recalled that watching the scene in a crowded theatre felt even more epic.
Quentin Tarantino emphasized that prior to the talk show segment, he hadn’t become particularly invested in the film.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I often ponder if classics like “Taxi Driver” should be remade for comic book movie fans. Yet, Quentin Tarantino initially felt Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in the original wasn’t exceptional. But after watching him in “Folie à Deux,” the director admitted that it left such an impact on him that it literally blew his mind away.
Although Tarintino thought that Phoenix’s performance was an Oscar-winning delivery, he even thought Leonardo DiCaprio should have won the Academy Award.
In regards to Folie à Deux, it’s worth noting that after discussing this film, the director of Kill Bill commended the creative application of music throughout. He admitted that these musical choices captivated him and kept him engaged with the movie.
In the praise for his work, the filmmaker commended Phoenix’s vocal performance by saying that he “really delivered” or “gave an outstanding performance.
In the newly launched movie that hit screens on October 2, 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux, you’ll find Lady Gaga playing the role of Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix.
