What Was Matthew Perry’s ‘Dying Wish’? Late Actor’s Father Reveals in a Heartfelt Interview

As a dedicated fan who has followed Matthew Perry’s journey through the years, I cannot help but feel a deep sense of sadness and loss upon hearing about his untimely demise. Having grown up watching him bring Chandler Bing to life on Friends, I felt a personal connection to his character and was always eager to see what he would do next.

On this solemn anniversary of my dear son Matthew Perry’s passing, I find myself reflecting on our cherished moments together as a devoted follower of our family bond. In an interview with PEOPLE, I shared how we managed to stay close throughout the years, his father Keith Morrison and I.

On numerous occasions, the doctor would visit us and express concerns such as, “He might not make it through the night,” or “He won’t last the week,” or “He’s very near to death, be prepared for that eventuality.” This is how Toni Morrison recollected the situation.

Over the course of several years, Perry’s family often braced themselves for the prospect of his passing, and miraculous medical interventions managed to save his life on more than one occasion. This is what he remembered.

On October 28, 2023, Perry unfortunately lost his life at the age of 54. Initially, it was speculated that his death was caused by an accidental drowning, but upon deeper examination and analysis of the autopsy report, it was determined that he succumbed to the “sharp impacts” of Ketamine, a powerful hallucinogenic substance.

The actor’s stepfather disclosed that his last wish was to be known primarily for his acts of kindness towards others, rather than his fame from playing Chandler Bing on the popular sitcom “Friends,” for which he received numerous awards.

Days before his death, it was Morrison (who’s married to Matthew’s mother Suzanne Morrison) who observed a shift in the actor’s demeanor. He stated that his son appeared content and aimed to reconcile with the family.

Morrison reminisced that Perry wasn’t typically someone who would express affection like, ‘I adore you, I yearn for you.’ However, he was frequently saying these things, according to Morrison, which might have been a premonition or acceptance of the impending change within Perry.

During an interview on Today, Keith’s mother, Caitlin Morrison, found herself feeling the same emotional depth as Keith did, when Perry displayed unexpected affection towards her just a few weeks prior to his passing. She reminisced about Perry showing her his newly acquired homes and expressing his love for her.

She shared that it felt like a foreshadowing of some event, little did she know it would be their final profound talk with Perry. On the other hand, Keith expressed how devastating it is to receive news of a loved one’s overdose-related death.

He stated, “It rips you asunder,” referring to Matthew’s loss. “Matthew’s mother will remain forever changed by this. Every day, every moment, she’s preoccupied with him. The same goes for me and us all,” Keith continued.
