As a long-time fan who has been following the Blade saga since the late ’90s, I must say that this rollercoaster of production changes and delays has left me feeling like Blade himself – constantly on edge, but always ready to fight for what I believe in.
Lately, there’s been an abundance of unfavorable reports concerning the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe “Blade” remake. Following months of difficulties and Yann Demange stepping down from his directorial role, the movie has now been removed from Disney’s 2025 release calendar.
Given the current circumstances – no confirmed filming date, finalized script, or assigned director yet – it’s not surprising that they’ve postponed the movie release, which was originally planned for November 2025.
According to trusted sources like Daniel Richtman, it appears that the Blade movie has undergone another alteration. He hints at a potential commencement of filming in 2025 within the United Kingdom. The revised plan includes a reduced budget and an anticipated darker tone, as they are currently reworking the script to fit an R rating.
This news is encouraging, given that rumors suggest Mahershala Ali remains attached to the project. It aligns well since sources indicate he aims to craft Blade as a parallel to Black Panther for himself.
The details about the movie’s storyline are still scant, but rumors indicate that with each new screenwriter, the narrative undergoes significant alterations.
In May 2013, Marvel Studios had a draft for a fresh Blade movie following the return of the rights from New Line Cinema. Then, in February 2019, Mahershala Ali expressed interest in playing the lead role after his performance in Luke Cage. Eventually, at San Diego Comic-Con in July, Marvel confirmed him as Blade, and he made an unaccredited voice appearance in Eternals (2021).
In February 2021, Stacy Osei-Kuffour took up the role as scriptwriter, and by September, Bassam Tariq joined the team as director. Unfortunately, Tariq departed from the project about a year later due to alterations in production and artistic disagreements.
In November 2022, Yann Demange was slated to direct, with Michael Starrbury working on the screenplay. Then, Nic Pizzolatto came aboard as a writer in April 2023, and by November of that year, Michael Green had also been brought on to write a fresh script. However, Demange departed from the project in June 2024, with Pearson stepping up to revise the screenplay instead.
Initially, the narrative was intended to center around Blade’s daughter and be set in the past. However, before Demange departed, the storyline was characterized as merely Blade slaying vampires, a concept that most fans found acceptable.
There are no updates yet on how the movie connects to the Midnight Sons project.
