Dana Carvey Regrets Cracking Jokes On Lady Gaga During His Biden Episode; Reveals Joke He Should Have Delivered Instead

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a keen eye for comedy and a deep appreciation for the nuances of iconic performances, I must say that Dana Carvey‘s recent reflections on his SNL episode are a testament to the unpredictable nature of live comedy and the creative process.

Dana Carvey, speaking on the Fly on the Wall podcast, discussed the joke about Lady Gaga during an SNL episode where he impersonated Joe Biden. He felt the joke didn’t work well and admitted that he had a different, Joker-themed set prepared but didn’t use it. During the same episode, Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg also joined him in their respective political figure costumes.

During a conversation with the podcast host, Carvey stated, “I perform the small Biden character in the sketch featuring Bret Baier questioning Maya-Kamala. And at one point, Biden seems a bit perplexed and starts discussing the Joker movie, but it appears neither of them realize this reference.

According to a clip shared by Saturday Night Live’s team, the skit features Bret Brier, played by Alec Baldwin, who showcases a misleading video. In this video, Carvey’s portrayal of Biden (or Maya Rudolph as Harris) seems to make derogatory remarks about Kamala Harris.

In the video, the comedian comments, “People, we face other issues right now.” He continues by saying, “Four years ago, he was the one everyone admired. But now, they’ve replaced him with a woman, and some people are wondering, ‘Why is she here?’

In the ensuing sequence, Rudolph made it clear that Carvey was referring to Folie à Deux, not Harris. Biden inquired, “And why does she sing?” He persisted with his queries, “What’s a Folie à Deux? What does ‘ga ga ga ga goo ga’ mean? I don’t understand. No joker, no joke.” (In this context, ‘Folie à Deux’ is a reference to a psychiatric term for shared psychosis between two people, and ‘ga ga ga ga goo ga’ are lyrics from the song by Joe Cocker that Carvey was referencing.)

In a recent discussion about the creation of his jokes, the actor shared on a podcast that he actually had even funnier jokes ready but they didn’t quite work out. Carvey admitted, “I tried ‘Who’s the lady Gaga? You know, whatever.’ I did it, but it didn’t hit the mark.

He added, “I thought later, I should have said, ‘And who’s Whackin Phoenix? Who the hell is he? Whackin Phoenix would have gotten a big laugh.'”

In the course of our chat, the comedian-actor hinted that he could unexpectedly drop by, leaving the Saturday Night Live performer in the dark about his arrival.
