‘It Wasn’t Even A…’: Kate Winslet Shares New Anecdote About Iconic Titanic ‘Door’ Scene With Leonardo DiCaprio

As a dedicated Titanic fan since its release in 1997, I have always wondered about the infamous “door” scene and whether Jack and Rose could have survived if they had clung onto the piece of debris together. Kate Winslet’s recent revelation that it wasn’t even a door but a broken piece of banister from the ship has left me both intrigued and slightly disappointed.

In a recent interview, Kate Winslet hints that the object in the iconic Titanic scene where her character Rose supposedly grabs onto may not actually have been a door. This revelation has sparked curiosity among fans ever since the movie’s release, as some speculate whether Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose could have both held onto the floating wooden plank to survive until help arrived.

During her interview on The Project, Winslet clarified that the object fans often refer to as a ‘door’ was actually a broken banister piece from the ship, in reference to her biopic Lee. She anticipated that she would be asked about the door, given its widespread discussion since the film’s release in 1997.

She shared that she had faced these questions numerous times before, finding it somewhat unusual when people got them wrong. She humorously likened this to someone bringing up the Titanic and then asking about the door next. She confidently anticipated this and was correct. However, what I find intriguing is that people persistently call it a door. In actuality, it wasn’t even a door at all.

The contentious question of whether both Jack and Rose could fit on the piece of debris instead of sinking with the Titanic has been entertaining audiences for many years. James Cameron, Titanic’s director, even ordered scientific research on this issue, using stuntmen to model four different situations, looking for different positions of the debris and trying to figure out if there were ways both characters could have floated on it. But his conclusions led him to believe, Jack wouldn’t do anything too experimental at that moment to risk Rose’s safety.

Winstel continued, “It was a broken railing, similar to a stairway or the like. It’s uncertain if DiCaprio could’ve managed to stand on it. To be honest, I don’t have any unique insights regarding this matter; many others have already attempted to solve the same puzzle.

This year, Kate Winslet playfully implied that Leonardo DiCaprio might have moved past the persistent ‘door’ query stage, suggesting instead he may experience something akin to post-traumatic stress from being repeatedly asked about it. Winslet also shared some fascinating backstage insights with Josh Horowitz, including the tidbit that the iconic scene was filmed in a tank with water up to their waists.

During the whole filming process, the cast and crew had to adjust to the constant sound of rushing water. As she mentioned, the water level was low enough that during breaks between takes, she could stand up and walk towards the edge of the tank, then climb back onto the railing to continue shooting.
