As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the arts and a keen understanding of the challenges faced by individuals in the spotlight, I find myself deeply moved by the story of Matthew Perry and his mother Suzanne Morrison. Their heart-wrenching conversation, filled with love and an underlying sense of foreboding, serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities that often lie beneath the glamour of Hollywood.
Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of death and substance abuse.
Suzanne Morrison, Matthew Perry’s mom, talked openly for the first time about her son’s passing and shared their last moment together. In an interview with Savannah Guthrie from Today Show, Suzanne, along with other family members, reminisced on their bond with the Friends actor before he passed away.
On October 28th, she found herself seated next to Keith Morrison, Perry’s stepfather. She remembered a touching discussion she had with her deceased son, who had recently shown her one of his newly acquired properties. He approached her and said, “‘I adore you so much and I’m overjoyed to be with you now,’ ” she recounted.
It seemed as though a premonition was unfolding because surprisingly, after years of no such intimacy, they had an intense conversation. Suzanne remembers thinking there was something inexorable about what would transpire next for him, and he felt it strongly. At the moment, Perry’s acceptance of what was to come and his assertion that he was no longer afraid alarmed Suzanne.
On what would’ve been Perry’s first anniversary since his passing, his beloved ones gathered for an interview with NBC’s morning news show to honor his memory. Though our hearts were heavy with sorrow and grief, we found solace in the mission that he had so passionately pursued: helping others find sobriety.
On October 28, 2023, Perry was discovered unconscious in a hot tub at his Los Angeles residence and later pronounced dead; he was 54 years old. A subsequent autopsy report indicated that the cause of death was the acute impact of ketamine, a drug classified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as a “dissociative anesthetic with some hallucinogenic properties.
After his sad passing away, the actor’s family conveyed a message to PEOPLE that said, “We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of our dear son and sibling.” The statement went on to express that Perry was someone who spread “happiness worldwide” and appreciated the immense amount of affection shown.
