As a dedicated follower of Margaret Qualley‘s career, I must say that her journey in Hollywood is nothing short of inspiring. From her humble beginnings to her current status as a critically acclaimed actress, she has proven time and again that determination and hard work can indeed pay off.
On this very day, the 23rd of October, I’m reminded that the radiant Margaret Qualley, an actress I admire, has stepped into her third decade. In honor of her special occasion, let’s rewind to a moment when her husband, Jack Antonoff, spun a whopper of a yarn to aid Qualley in securing her coveted role in Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2. A tale as amusing as it was instrumental!
On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the actress openly shared that Happy Gilmore, released in 1996 by Sandler, held a special place as both her “most beloved film” and where she had her initial romantic feelings stirred.
Qualley eagerly expressed her desire to feature in the upcoming sequel of the 90s comedy after Netflix made the announcement. She immediately emailed her agents saying, “Whatever it takes – no role is too small. I need to be a part of this! Please let me join, I’m begging you!” This was her recollection of the incident.
Not long after, it became known that Jack Antonoff, Margaret Qualley’s husband who is a singer, songwriter, and record producer, had misrepresented Qualley’s golf background when he recommended her to Adam Sandler for the movie role.
On Jimmy Fallon’s talk show, they displayed a conversation via text message between Antonoff and Sandler. In this exchange, when Sandler inquired about Antonoff’s wife’s golfing skills, Antonoff responded affirmatively, stating that she’s quite talented at it.
Later on, Qualley openly acknowledged her inability to play golf and playfully praised Antonoff as an excellent husband for deceiving in support of their family. The actress further disclosed that she has never played golf in her entire life and admitted to being quite poor at it.
As she continued with her golf lessons, she remained quite poor at the sport.
In a discussion about her part in Happy Gilmore 2, Margaret Qualley expressed that the movie was “the most wonderful experience I’ve ever had,” despite having a “minor role” in the follow-up. She humorously added, “I’m essentially just set decoration, but I can pass away contentedly now,” referring to landing the part.
Margaret Qualley first showcased her acting skills in the 2013 drama Palo Alto, and gained more prominence following her performance as a supporting character in the HBO drama series The Leftovers.
She gained additional recognition and received Primetime Emmy Award nominations, not only for her performance as Ann Reinking in the FX miniseries Fosse/Verdon (2019), but also for portraying the main character in Netflix’s series Maid (2021).
The actress often works alongside director Yorgos Lanthimos, and she’s featured prominently in his highly-regarded films such as “Poor Things” (2023), “Kinds of Kindness” (2024) and “The Substance” (2024).
In addition to gracing the big screen, I’ve had the pleasure of being featured in films such as The Nice Guys (2016), Death Note (2017), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), with a host of other notable productions too.
