Following his Oscar win for the screenplay of Sinners, Ryan Coogler has established himself as a skilled storyteller, particularly within genre films. He’s been planning a reboot of the classic 1990s sci-fi/horror series, The X-Files, for some time. While details about his vision are still emerging, it’s expected to be a fresh take on the show’s eleven previous seasons. Gillian Anderson, who originally starred in The X-Files, has shared that the project is both intriguing and promising.
At Awesome Con in Washington, DC this weekend, Anderson addressed the possibility of a reboot, giving an enthusiastic but mysterious answer – a response fitting for her character, Agent Scully, but surprisingly not a direct one.

I had the amazing opportunity to interview Gillian Anderson at Awesome Con in Washington D.C. on March 15th, where we discussed her entire career. Naturally, I asked her about the possibility of a reboot of ‘The X Files’ directed by Ryan Coogler, the director of ‘Creed’ and ‘Black Panther’! #thexfiles #90snostalgia #throwbacktvshows – via @Fandom Spotlite

In a TikTok video posted by user dory_jackson, Anderson says the pilot script is really good, but asks viewers to approach it with an open mind. She encourages them to “give it a chance, because it’s gonna be awesome.”
Ryan Coogler often updates established stories for modern audiences, as he successfully did with Creed and Black Panther, earning widespread praise for both. His vision for The X-Files seems likely to be a continuation of the show’s spirit rather than a simple remake, bringing the core ideas into the 2020s. Today’s world is different from 1993 – people are much more aware of government actions and generally distrustful, so the idea of an alien conspiracy wouldn’t be as surprising.
Anderson seems enthusiastic about participating in the project, and it’s great to see Coogler respects her so much. Even if Dana Scully has a small role in the new X-Files, Anderson’s support is all I need.
