Jimmy Olsen DCU Series Still Untitled as DC Locks in Crime Mystery Comedy Angle

The upcoming series about Jimmy Olsen, a spin-off of Superman, is still in development at DC Studios. While the project is progressing, a final title hasn’t been decided yet.

Dan Perrault, a co-showrunner on the project, recently told The Direct at SXSW that they were still debating character names even last week.

He also made clear it won’t be called “Daily Planet” and it won’t be “Untitled Jimmy Olsen show.”

Daniel Perrault, working with Tony Yacenda, has confirmed they are both involved with the series, following previous reports that the creators of American Vandal were attached.

He described the show as a funny crime mystery, a genre he and Yacenda are well-known for creating.

Tony Yacenda and I are very familiar with this type of show – a crime mystery with comedic elements. We’ve been working on these kinds of stories for a long time, and we’re bringing some unique approaches to this new superhero project that haven’t been seen before.”

Title still not revealed

So, I was reading an interview with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it sounds like they still haven’t decided on the official name for the DC Universe! Apparently, they’ve got a few ideas they really like, but they’re taking their time and haven’t committed to anything just yet. It’s interesting to hear they’re still workshopping it, honestly.

James Gunn has confirmed that while a series is in development, it was never called “DC Crime.” He previously denied the existence of a project with that title, stating it wasn’t even a temporary name considered during development. He later clarified that the series is happening, just not under that rumored name.

A different kind of DCU show

Perrault also explained that the Jimmy Olsen series won’t feel like a standard superhero show.

He says the new project combines elements of crime stories, mystery, and comedy – a style both he and Yacenda are known for. This makes sense, as the two previously created American Vandal, the popular mockumentary that cleverly mixed silly humor with the format of a true-crime documentary.

What has been reported about the story

Initial reports indicated the show would be a fictional true-crime documentary series, hosted by Jimmy Olsen, with the first season centered around the story of Gorilla Grodd.

I also read in Variety that the team behind The Suicide Squad – Perrault and Yacenda – are going to be writing, running the show, and executive producing this new project. That’s great news! Plus, James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are now heading up DC Studios, are also on board as executive producers, which gives me a lot of confidence in where this is going.
