PINGU the Penguin Is Back in a New Animated Series

As a lifelong fan of adorable animals and quirky children’s characters, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming revival of Pingu! With its charming stop-motion animation and irresistible sass, this little penguin is right up there with D.W. from Arthur in my book. And to think that the talented folks at Aardman Animations are involved? That’s the icing on the cake, considering I’ve got Shaun the Sheep plastered all over my social media profiles.

Mattel and Aardman are working together to create a new animated television show based on the character Pingu, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! Being an enthusiast of adorable animals and clever kids’ characters (like D.W. from Arthur), there’s nothing better for me than Pingu. The upcoming series will employ both stop-motion and 3D animation techniques.

It’s thrilling to know that renowned stop-motion animation studio Aardman Animations is involved in this project, especially since I’m such an ardent fan of their iconic character Shaun the Sheep. In fact, he graces every one of my social media profiles! Beyond Shaun, the studio has produced timeless masterpieces like Wallace & Gromit, and a fresh installment in the series is set to debut at the start of next year.

At Aardman, we delight in working with intellectual properties that match our passion for humor, warmth, and compelling narratives,” said Sarah Cox, the Chief Creative Director at Aardman. “From our initial talks with Mattel, we sensed a swift and potent bond due to our mutual affection for Pingu, the timeless charm of the original IP, and comedy that resonates across language boundaries, captivating audiences worldwide. The blend of Aardman and Pingu feels instinctive and appealing. The enchanting stop-motion animation combined with the unique wit, offbeat humor, and character-driven storytelling fits seamlessly with our creative style. There are countless tales waiting to be told; we’re eagerly looking forward to getting started on this exciting collaboration.

You might still be familiar with Pingu, even if you’ve never watched his show, due to the popularity he’s gained recently on social media. With his lively character, he has become quite popular on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. His signature “NOOT NOOT” catchphrase is everywhere!

If you’re not well-acquainted with Pingu, he’s a mischievous penguin who frequently finds himself in humorous predicaments and needs assistance to get out of them. He relies on his parents, friends, and little sister Pinga for help. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the series is set at the South Pole. Originating from the 1980s, the appeal of Pingu lies in its distinctive form of communication, a language known as “Penguinese,” which is universally comprehensible.

Mattel obtained Pingu, a British-American entertainment company that owns popular children’s shows like Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, and Barney & Friends, in 2011 by buying HIT Entertainment. Now, Mattel is exploring the possibility of creating movies for two of these well-known series.

At present, there’s no word on when the show will start airing. To catch more Pingu content before the new series arrives, visit the official Pingu YouTube channel. There, you’ll find numerous clips that have been shared over time. Here’s one of my all-time favorites: [link to video]
