Mary J. Blige recently shared a story about a hurtful experience she had early in her career with one of her musical heroes. On the R&B Money podcast, the singer explained that meeting this artist she greatly admired turned into a surprisingly negative critique.
Blige, who first became famous in 1992 with her album What’s the 411?, said the pop star offered unwanted and harsh advice. According to Mary, the unnamed singer criticized both her appearance and her singing during their brief conversation.
“This person told me I should dye my hair so my roots matched, and that I needed to learn to sing on key,” Mary recounted to podcast host Tank. She admitted the comments were shocking and made her doubt herself, especially as she was just starting out and trying to establish herself in the music industry.
It’s always been a bit of a mystery who exactly dissed Mary J. Blige years ago, and fans have been trying to figure it out forever. A lot of people think it was Chaka Khan. She’s definitely been open about not loving Mary’s 1992 cover of “Sweet Thing.” I’ve seen old interviews where Chaka playfully (but honestly!) said Mary’s vocals sounded a little flat on the track, even jokingly asking what time of day she’d recorded it. It’s a funny story, but clearly, it stuck with people – and probably with Mary too!
Although Mary J. Blige and Chaka Khan initially had some disagreements, they eventually worked through them and even collaborated on music. Chaka Khan described their early tension as a form of tough love, explaining they were able to be honest with each other. Mary, however, still remembers how challenging it was to meet someone she admired. As of March, Mary J. Blige continues to thrive and grow her entertainment career. Her latest single, “More Than a Lover,” released in February, is already a fan favorite with its smooth, soulful sound. The song follows her successful 2024 album, Gratitude, and hints at exciting things to come in her career.
The singer is getting ready for her first Las Vegas residency, called “My Life, My Story,” which starts in May at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The show promises to be a spectacular look back at her career, with both classic songs and new music.
She’s also continuing her work in film and television with a new deal to make three movies for Lifetime. The first, Mary J. Blige Presents: Be Happy, premiered on February 7th and was directed by Academy Award nominee Gabourey Sidibe.
With her wine brand, Sun Goddess, and her ongoing music and film projects, she’s proving herself to be a talented and determined figure in Hollywood. Her ability to overcome challenges and build a lasting career is what makes her such a unique and influential voice in R&B.
