As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror and suspense, I can’t help but feel my heart race at the prospect of Mike Flanagan and Stephen King joining forces once again to bring ‘Carrie’ to life on the small screen. With Flanagan’s mastery of storytelling and King’s knack for creating chilling tales, this collaboration promises to be a thrill ride that will keep us on the edge of our seats.
Following the triumph of ‘The Life of Chuck’ at the Toronto Film Festival, Mike Flanagan shows no signs of slowing down. As reported by Deadline, he is joining forces once more with Stephen King to adapt the classic novel ‘Carrie’ into an 8-episode series for Amazon. This new venture signifies another fruitful partnership between the experienced director and renowned author.
In 1974, Stephen King’s groundbreaking novel ‘Carrie’ came out, portraying the story of a naive teenage girl who, due to her sheltered life and torment at school, unleashes hidden powers with devastating consequences, stemming from her oppressive upbringing and bullying experiences.
Two years after the book’s publication, it was first brought to life on screen by Brian De Palma in a film starring Sissy Spacek. This initial adaptation paved the way for various adaptations that emerged later, such as a 2002 TV movie and a 2013 film with Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.
This fresh series isn’t the sole King adaptation departing from the conventional movie structure; A24 is venturing into transforming ‘Fairy Tale’ into a series, helmed by Paul Greegrass and JH Wyman. Just like ‘Salem’s Lot,’ directed by Gary Dauberman, and other King tales are being reimagined for screens, showcasing that certain narratives necessitate extended screen time to achieve their full potential.
Flanagan and Trevor Macy will take on the roles as executive producers for the ‘Carrie’ series, while Stephen King is engaged in various adaptations of his novels. Some significant projects are underway, such as ‘The Long Walk’ at Lionsgate, new interpretations of ‘The Institute,’ and a revival of ‘The Running Man’ featuring Glen Powell, who replaces Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original role.
With preparations for the ‘Carrie’ series gathering momentum, it seems a writers’ team is now being put together, implying that production is progressing rapidly. Mike Flanagan, represented by WME, and Stephen King, managed by Rand Holston Management and Gang Tyre, are working diligently to craft our encounters with horror and suspense, chapter by captivating chapter.
