‘Spider-Man’ Director Jon Watts Speaks Out on Assembling His Crew of Directors for ‘Skeleton Crew’

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s been through more intergalactic adventures than Han Solo himself, I can confidently say that the upcoming series, “Skeleton Crew,” looks absolutely thrilling! The combination of Jude Law and child actors lost in space promises an exciting and unique journey.

As a dedicated Star Wars fan, I’m super excited about the upcoming live-action series, Skeleton Crew. It promises to bring a fresh perspective to the franchise that I believe will resonate with fellow fans. Unlike any other live-action Star Wars project out there, this one offers an unique experience that has been confined to the pages of books and comics until now. Can’t wait to see it unfold on screen!

As a gamer, I’ll be stepping into the shoes of Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood – a Force user shrouded in mystery. A band of young talents and I find ourselves lost amidst the vastness of space. It’s up to me, Jod, to navigate this unforgiving, uncaring universe and help us all return home safely, especially since it seems to be particularly harsh on the youngest among us.

However, it’s important to note that while the series boasts a well-known personality in front of the camera, there are also notable figures working behind the scenes. The role of showrunner for this project is being handled by Jon Watts, renowned for his work as director on Tom Holland’s Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man trilogy. In this article, we delve into what some of the key crew members have shared about the project.

The details we’re providing are derived from a fresh interview with Empire magazine. During this conversation, they shared some unseen images from the series as well. Empire Magazine inquired about Watts’ approach to gathering his directors for the show, and these individuals have also shared their perspectives on the matter. Let me share the details:

Jon Watts: Ford and I had a chat, “Who are our preferred directors for this project?” We reached out to everyone, and amazingly, all of you agreed. No one refused! “How would you feel about taking on Star Wars? Experiment in the Volume? Create pre-visualization? Meet some pirates, some puppets, work with Jude Law?” “Sounds fantastic!

David Lowery described the concept as, “It’s about children lost in the Star Wars universe with pirates around.” I responded, “That sounds exciting! With my recent Peter Pan movie experience, I’m already in the pirate realm.” You added, “There’s a robot named SM-33.” I joked, “Oh, ‘Smee’, that’s quite Peter Pan-ish.” Then you revealed, “Jude Law is going to star.” My reaction was, “Wow! It feels like I’ve created this myself since Jude Law played my Captain Hook in the past. Revisiting it in Star Wars was a dream come true.

Bryce Dallas Howard: I’ve known these guys — and Ford — for literally over 20 years. Watts has a playbill from something that I directed in college! My first time encountering ‘Grammar Rodeo’ was with the [Lucasfilm] pre-vis team. I was working on [The Mandalorian] Season 3 at the time. I was like, “How is it?” And they’re like, “It’s so good.”

Jake Schreier: Jon and Ford were my college roommates, so they might have said something like, “Well, we already knew Jake could do it too.” During our first year at NYU, every student was required to complete a semester of sound work. The sound project that Jon and Ford had been working on for a considerable amount of time was a pirate radio drama.

Lee Isaac Chung shared that he had discussed his work on “Mando” with Jon Favreau. On “The Mandalorian,” things are very hush-hush. After I expressed my interest in the project, Favreau then disclosed what we were working on. However, during my initial conversation with Jon Watts, he immediately showed me concept art – it felt like I was peeking at secrets that weren’t meant for my eyes just yet.

Finally, Watts provided us with the following conclusion:

Watts: It’s likely I violated a confidentiality agreement. The drama film Minari by Chung (2020) is exceptional, especially in its handling of young actors. We were thrilled to have you on board since our series features four ten-year-olds as the main cast. We sought directors who could offer a fresh take on Star Wars, while still maintaining their distinctive storytelling style. Having worked with Daniels before, through Larkin Seiple, their longtime cinematographer, who has collaborated with me and Jake, made our decision easier. At the time we hired them, Everything Everywhere had not been released yet; I was merely a fan of their film Swiss Army Man, as well as their eccentric commercials and music videos.
