While increasingly prevalent, the integration of artificial intelligence into online information seeking presents a paradox: improved access coupled with potential inaccuracies. This research, ‘Overreliance on AI in Information-seeking from Video Content’, investigates how generative AI impacts accuracy, efficiency, and user confidence when retrieving information from video sources. Our findings reveal that while AI assistance enhances speed and can improve accuracy when relevant videos are viewed, participants often over-rely on AI outputs-a tendency exacerbated by misleading AI, yet surprisingly unaccompanied by a decline in self-reported confidence. Given these fundamental safety risks, how can we design AI-mediated video retrieval systems that promote both effective information access and critical evaluation?
The Shifting Sands of Information Access
The proliferation of digital video has fundamentally reshaped how individuals attempt to gather information, presenting significant challenges to established methods. Historically, text-based search dominated information retrieval, allowing users to quickly scan and assess relevance. However, the exponential growth of video platforms means that a vast amount of knowledge now exists within visual and auditory formats, demanding substantially more time and effort to process. Unlike text, video requires sequential consumption, making it difficult to pinpoint specific information without exhaustive viewing. Consequently, the sheer volume of digital video is not simply a matter of increased access, but a fundamental disruption of established pathways to knowledge.

A vigilant approach, combined with independent fact-checking, safeguards against the spread of misinformation and ensures informed decision-making, regardless of the technological assistance employed.
The next generation of AI assistance for video content should move beyond simple information retrieval and actively foster critical thinking skills in viewers. Current research indicates that integrating features which prompt independent verification of claims, highlight potential biases, or encourage cross-referencing with other sources could significantly enhance the efficiency of information processing. Projected gains range from +7.8% to +37.1%, dependent on video length and the specific round of analysis, suggesting a substantial improvement in how individuals engage with and assess video-based information.
