Director Kelly Marcel on Directing ‘Venom: The Last Dance’: “It was challenging.”

As a dedicated comic book fan, I eagerly await Venom: The Last Dance next week, hoping it will be more like Deadpool & Wolverine and less like Joker: Folie à Deux. While we patiently wait for its release, we’re diving deeper into the making of this anticipated movie, starting with an interview Kelly Marcel gave to IGN about her experience as a first-time director of such a special effects-heavy film.

Next week, “Venom: The Final Showdown” is set to release, marking its position as the third and concluding installment that fans of comic books have been anxiously anticipating for quite some time. We were thrilled with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” disappointed by the flop “Joker: Madness Duet,” and are now eager to see whether “Venom: The Final Showdown” will resemble the former rather than the latter in quality.

As we eagerly anticipate watching the film, we’ll continue to provide you with additional insights about it. This will include details that come straight from those who played a key role in its creation, giving you a deeper understanding of the movie-making process.

In this article, we delve into an interview conducted by IGN with director Kelly Marcel. During this conversation, she shared insights on various captivating topics, such as the creative journey that led to the overall production of the film. For those eager to learn about her behind-the-scenes experience, we invite you to continue reading our report!

Previously recognized primarily as a producer and screenwriter, Kelly Marcel had penned both ‘Venom’ films prior to her directorial venture with the third and concluding installment. Titled ‘Venom: The Last Dance’, this film marks Marcel’s debut as a director. In an interview with IGN, she discussed the intricacies of creating a movie heavily reliant on special effects.

Assistant: Congratulations on your first time directing a feature film! Given that you’ve penned and produced the previous two Venom movies, how daunting was it to handle a project with such a strong emphasis on visual effects as a new director in this role?

Marcel: Working on the first two films gave me a good understanding of the special effects and VFX needed for these movies. It was great to have Chris Corbould leading our team in SFX. My goal was to do as much practical work as possible; one scene, in particular, called for Tom Hardy and the stunt crew to spend two weeks underwater in a custom-built rapids tank that Chris designed. The special effects in this movie are incredible, and Chris’ team, along with our second unit director Brian Smrz, took it to levels I hadn’t envisioned when I wrote it on paper.

In this project, our exceptional VFX team, headed by John Moffatt and Aharon Bourland, truly excelled. Not only did they surpass expectations, but they also introduced a diverse range of creatures that outshone those seen in the last two films. What stood out to me was their ability to infuse each creature with its own unique personality and character, which was crucial for the overall success of the project.

Responding to the tough query, I found it difficult, yet my team members rose magnificently to the occasion, working side by side with me to ensure that our shared vision became a reality.
