John Boyega Has Talked to Dave Filoni About STAR WARS Return

John Boyega’s character, Finn, became a fan favorite in the newer Star Wars films, but Boyega has publicly shared his disappointment with how Lucasfilm developed the character, particularly after experiencing a lot of racist online abuse. Early marketing for The Force Awakens led many to believe Finn would be the main hero with Jedi powers, but the story ultimately focused on Rey instead. Now, with a change in leadership at Lucasfilm – Dave Filoni is taking over from Kathleen Kennedy – there’s a possibility Finn could return in future installments, according to reports from Screen Rant and Variety.

During a recent appearance at Megacon, someone in the audience jokingly asked John Boyega to reach out to Dave Filoni about a potential return for his character, Finn. Boyega surprisingly responded that he already had. This has led fans to speculate about what that conversation could have been about. Boyega had previously indicated he wasn’t interested in reprising the role for a Disney+ series, and Lucasfilm seems to be focusing on bigger Star Wars projects meant for the big screen instead. This raises the question of whether Lucasfilm is considering a dedicated film centered around Finn, and clues from The Rise of Skywalker suggest possible storylines.

Several moments in The Rise of Skywalker suggested Finn might be strong with the Force, like when he sensed Rey was in danger. While he could be a major character alongside Rey in the next Star Wars film, it might feel like he’d be overshadowed again. What John Boyega likely wants is a Star Wars project where a Black actor takes the lead role. Perhaps Rey could train Finn, and we see him become a fully realized Jedi years later – that seems like a story many fans would enjoy. Only time will tell what the future holds for the former stormtrooper, FN-2187.
