Dwayne Johnson Brings Maui to Life in Jaw-Dropping New ‘Moana’ Live Action Trailer

As a huge movie fan, I was so excited to see Disney just dropped a new trailer for the live-action Moana! It finally gives us a really good look at Dwayne Johnson as Maui – seeing him fully transformed into the demigod is amazing. Disney and Dwayne Johnson himself announced it on Monday, March 26th, and I’ve already watched the trailer a few times!

The newest trailer showcases Dwayne Johnson as Maui, complete with his long dark hair and iconic tattoos, bringing the beloved character to life. Catherine Laga’aia returns as Moana, and fans can hear her singing, along with appearances by the dazzling crab Tamatoa. Disney reports the trailer hints at the same action, adventure, and emotional core that made both the 2016 animated film Moana and its 2024 sequel so successful.

The movie Moana tells the story of a young woman who embarks on an incredible adventure with the legendary demigod Maui. Guided by the ocean, they travel beyond her island home to save her people and bring back prosperity.

Thomas Kail directed the live-action movie, with Auli‘i Cravalho and Lin-Manuel Miranda – who originally voiced Moana and wrote its music – serving as producers. In November 2024, photos surfaced of Dwayne Johnson filming in Hawaiʻi, noticeably muscular and without a shirt for the role. He told Extra that the costume took around two hours each day to apply, emphasizing the dedication required to become Maui.

Okay, folks, if you’re looking for a summer escape, look no further than Disney’s Moana! I just got a sneak peek, and let me tell you, it’s a truly unforgettable adventure. You’ll be swept away with Moana, Maui, and their hilarious animal companions, Heihei and Pua. Seriously, this is one you absolutely need to see on the big screen – it hits theaters July 10th. Trust me, you won’t regret answering the ocean’s call!

The film features John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as her mother Sina, and Rena Owen as her grandmother, Gramma Tala. Disney plans to continue making live-action versions of its classic animated films, with upcoming movies like a new Hercules and a live-action sequel to Lilo & Stitch.
