‘God of War’ Series Loses Showrunners, Still Moving Forward with Amazon

As a die-hard God of War fan with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I must say that the recent news about the series adaptation has left me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, it’s fantastic to see such an iconic franchise getting the television treatment, especially with the talent behind shows like The Expanse and The Wheel of Time involved. However, the departure of these key creatives does give me a slight pang of worry.

One of the top and widely acclaimed video game series is God of War. Anyone who has played a single game from this collection would agree – it’s truly remarkable. The creators took Kratos, the protagonist, through the intricacies of Greek mythology, only to send him to Scandinavia next, where he encounters the terrifying aspects of the Norse pantheon.

The successors of the Nordic games are anticipated to be unveiled, given their exceptional performance. Possibly, it could be set in ancient Egypt. Moreover, enthusiasts of this franchise can look forward to a television series adaption of these beloved games. Amazon and Sony are joining forces on this series production.

It’s been some time since the confirmation, and although there were some early developments, no one has recently provided any new information about the series.

Currently, we’ve got some fresh and engaging news which could be seen as advantageous or disadvantageous based on your perspective of the details we’ll share with you.

Back in late 2022, I first caught wind of an exciting new series on the horizon. Rumors swirled that it would delve into the Norse realms, hinting at a potential shift from Kratos’ bloody past in ancient Greece. Though his Greek history might still make an appearance, it seemed the main series wouldn’t delve too deeply into those events. However, with a prequel always on the table, there’s still hope for more insight into Kratos’ earlier life.

It’s well-known that transforming video games into movies or TV shows can be quite challenging, often leaving fans feeling unsatisfied with the results.

While you might reference “The Witcher,” it’s important to remember that “The Witcher” is not just a video game series, but a collection of books as well. Contrastingly, we all know the fate of “Borderlands.” As for “Fallout,” it certainly serves as an illustrative example, but the realms of “Fallout” and “God of War” are so disparate that comparing them seems impractical.

As a devoted gamer, I recall the exciting news that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, masterminds behind “The Expanse,” were recruited as Executive Producers. Plus, Rafe Judkins, showrunner of “The Wheel of Time,” joined in on the action too. They were given the responsibility to pen down the scripts for the inaugural season, and I can hardly wait to see their creations unfold!

Presently, Deadline is exclusively disclosing that each of the three individuals involved have departed from the project and will no longer be part of it. A source has shared that Sony and Amazon admired their screenplays for the initial season, but they decided to take the show in a new creative direction instead.

It’s not ideal news, given that the primary figures involved in the project have decided to leave it. However, there’s some positive development: Both Sony and Amazon have shown their commitment to the series, and a new writers’ room is expected to be established shortly.

At present, this is everything we’ve got, and we fervently pray that they can bring forth a product that lives up to the standards of gaming.
