A recently released clip from the new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, reveals a seldom-seen creature from the Star Wars universe, marking its first appearance since the events of The Clone Wars.
Hitting theaters on May 22nd, the new film follows the ongoing adventures of Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, and his young companion, Grogu (who is the same species as Yoda). Pedro Pascal is back as the Mandalorian, and Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White are joining the cast as new characters: Weaver plays Ward, a leader in the New Republic, and White plays Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s son.
The trailer features a quick glimpse of an Anooba, a creature originally seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Some viewers think it could be Marrok, the Anooba sidekick of the bounty hunter Embo from the 2008 episode “Bounty.” However, it’s been established that Marrok died during the Battle of Jakku, so it’s more probable that this is simply a different Anooba character.
As a movie critic, I’ve seen a lot of alien designs, and the Anoobas are instantly recognizable thanks to their chin tusks. But the character Marrok? He was a fascinating exception to the rule – a truly unique Anooba who didn’t have them. It was a small detail, but it really helped set him apart and made him a more compelling figure on screen.

As a big Star Wars fan, I was really excited to spot an Anooba in the new film! It’s cool because Dave Filoni, who helped write the movie and actually created the Anooba species for the series, also voices the character Embo. It feels like a little wink to those of us who’ve been following Star Wars for a while. Now, I’m wondering if they’ll bring Marrok, the original Anooba, back into the story. They could, but Star Wars movies often change things that happened in the books – like Chuck Wendig’s ‘Aftermath: Empire’s End’ – so who knows what they’ll do with Marrok’s fate!
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really looking forward to the next season of The Mandalorian and Grogu! It’s great to see some characters we already love returning, and I’m always excited to meet new ones – especially the creatures! I’m particularly intrigued by the Anooba; they’re so rare, and I can’t wait to see what role they’ll play in the story.
