As an ardent fan who’s been following Lupita Nyong’o‘s illustrious career since her breakout role in “12 Years a Slave,” I must say that her latest venture, voicing Roz in “The Wild Robot,” has undoubtedly become my favorite among her many remarkable performances. Her dedication to her craft is unparalleled, and it’s a joy to witness an artist so deeply invested in their work.
Lupita Nyong’o shares her thoughts on potentially voicing another character in her newest film, The Wild Robot. As Roz, she enjoyed the unique experience of bringing a new character to life for audiences. In a special interview with TopMob, she spoke enthusiastically about the movie-making process and her excitement over portraying a role unlike any she’s done before. When asked if there were any other characters she’d consider voicing besides Roz, Nyong’o provided an emphatic response with a touching explanation.
Nyong’o stated that she would only choose to play the character of Roz (short for ROZZUM Unit 7134 from the movie) and when asked if she could lend her voice to any other character from the same film, the Academy Award-winning actress immediately replied, “I wouldn’t prefer voicing any other characters.
She mentioned that the other voice actors deliver exceptional performances for those characters, and she has a special fondness for Roz.
In this movie, we find ourselves following the storyline centered around Roz, a robot abandoned on an isolated island after a tragic shipwreck. Roz faces challenges adapting to her new environment, and unfortunately, she accidentally destroys a solitary goose egg nest. However, she decides to care for the remaining egg until it hatches. Along the way, she receives aid from Fox Fink, voiced by Pedro Pascal, and a opossum named by Catherine O’Hara.
In a different wording: Kit Connor, who voices the character Bightbill from Heartstopper, learns to fly as he matures, but finds it challenging to maintain a healthy bond with Roz after discovering the tragic cause of his biological mother’s demise. As the story unfolds and becomes more complex, Roz experiences numerous adventures both on and off the island that ultimately shape her life’s direction.
Lupita Nyong’o’s robot character chooses to leave the island to protect its wildlife. Despite returning to its original programming, it recalls everything and affectionately greets Brightbill during their heartfelt meeting. The movie adopts a hand-painted aesthetic reminiscent of classic Disney animations and the works of Hayao Miyazaki. This is DreamWorks’ final production where all team members were in-house, as future projects will primarily outsource many components to other studios.
The Wild Robot arrives in international theatres on October 18.
