Billy Magnussen Discusses Booster Gold Fan-Casting: “There’s this weird red tape around it”

As a die-hard DC fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing Billy Magnussen‘s recent revelation about Booster Gold. Magnussen, with his versatile acting chops and charming personality, would have been an excellent choice for the role. His experience in both musical and dramatic roles, as seen in Disney’s Aladdin and The Many Saints of Newark, respectively, only further solidifies my belief that he could bring a unique flair to Booster Gold.

In the works for the DC Universe are several ventures, one of which is a TV show focusing on Booster Gold. At this moment, details regarding the series are scant, other than its unveiling. However, as stated by James Gunn, an announcement doesn’t necessarily mean that the project will make it to production.

Recently, trustworthy outlets started announcing that Kumail Nanjiani, from the movie Eternals, had been selected for a part, causing a letdown among certain fans who believed he didn’t fit the physical profile of the character.

This speculation is particularly heightened given that fans have favored actors like Antony Starr and Chris Pratt for the role. Nanjiani has frequently been seen with James Gunn and the Superman cast at various events, fueling further rumors.

Lately, James Gunn posted a picture displaying the officially cast characters for the DC Universe, listing Nanjiani as Booster Gold. However, when inquired whether this meant Nanjiani had indeed been cast, Gunn clarified that it wasn’t the case.

At present, it’s unclear what will happen with Booster Gold’s role. Yet, a popular choice among fans for this part, Billy Magnussen, has sadly debunked some speculations about him being cast.

Actor Magnussen, recognized for his performances as Prince Anders in Disney’s 2019 version of Aladdin and A.C. in The Many Saints of Newark (2021), has proven his adaptability across various genres, excelling both in musical and dramatic roles. His talents have also been showcased in prominent films and series such as Game Night, Into the Woods, and Sorry for Your Loss.

In the spotlight for HBO’s “The Franchise,” Magnussen recently shared insights about the Booster Gold role during a chat on “The Kristina Harloff Show.” Due to HBO being under Warner Bros.’ ownership, he casually dropped an intriguing piece of information:

Absolutely, that’s quite amusing. I’ve known about Booster since the early days of the superhero era, and I’m currently making an effort to delve deeper into his story.

Asked about his current efforts towards the role, Magnussen confessed that he’s not aggressively seeking it right now, since he doesn’t find himself strongly drawn to that particular universe.

That realm isn’t accessible to me. There seems to be some complex bureaucracy preventing entry. Frankly, it’s quite bizarre. Truthfully, I’ve never found a way to break through its defenses.

Additionally, the actor shared that he’s never talked about the part with James Gunn and, surprisingly, he’s unsure if Gunn is even aware that he exists.

Since I’m not certain if [Gunn] is aware of my existence,… I believe there was a chance for me when I was younger. If the opportunity ever presents itself to wear a cape, I think one should be deliberate about it. You only get this chance once, unless you’re like Chris Evans. It seems they manage to repeat them so effortlessly, even with roles like Doom and other characters.

In conclusion, Magnussen pointed out that the world of Hollywood operates like a close-knit circle; once you’ve gained entry, it becomes more straightforward to remain, but breaking into this exclusive group can prove quite difficult for those who are yet to join.
