Hark, gentle investors, and lend an ear to a tale of rockets, revenue, and a valuation that doth strain the very bounds of reason! It is whispered amongst the financial houses that SpaceX, that purveyor of dreams and exorbitant price tags, prepares to grace the public markets. Elon Musk, a name now synonymous with both innovation and, shall we say, a certain… exuberance, intends to offer a slice of his celestial empire to the common man. A most diverting spectacle, is it not?

For two decades, this company hath remained cloistered, a private fiefdom of ambition. Now, it is expected to emerge, not as a humble star, but as a veritable supernova, valued at a trillion and a half dollars, or thereabouts. A sum that would place it amongst the ten most esteemed, and perhaps most inflated, companies in the world. One cannot help but observe the parallels with those grand theatrical productions, lavishly staged and brimming with spectacle, yet ultimately built upon foundations of… air.

The Avenues to Participation, or, How to Chase a Phantom

‘Tis said that several esteemed houses have already secured a stake in this venture. Alphabet, a titan of technology, holds a portion, a mere sliver, yet potentially worth a king’s ransom. EchoStar, a company once concerned with earthly transmissions, now finds itself entangled in the affairs of the heavens, having traded spectrum for shares. And the Ark Venture Fund, a collector of nascent wonders, boasts SpaceX as its most prized possession.

Alphabet’s investment, whilst substantial, appears a prudent diversification, a hedge against the inevitable whims of fate. EchoStar, however, presents a more curious case. This once-stolid enterprise, having offloaded its earthly holdings, now clings to the hope that SpaceX’s ascent will lift it from its current doldrums. A most precarious position, indeed, akin to a courtier relying on the favor of a capricious monarch.

For the common investor, EchoStar offers the most direct, albeit most desperate, path to participation. Its fortunes are so entwined with SpaceX that a downturn in the latter would surely spell ruin for the former. A risky gambit, to be sure, but one that appeals to those who fancy themselves daring speculators.

Should One Invest? A Question of Prudence, or Lack Thereof

Now, the crucial question: should one actually invest in this enterprise? SpaceX’s revenue, we are told, exceeded fifteen billion dollars last year, fueled by its Starlink satellite service. A respectable sum, to be sure, but hardly commensurate with a valuation that surpasses that of established empires.

To assign a value of one and a half trillion dollars to a company generating fifteen billion in revenue yields a price-to-sales ratio of one hundred. A figure so extravagant it would make even the most profligate nobleman blush. And let us not forget the additional burden of xAI, the artificial intelligence venture, which, whilst brimming with promise, currently consumes capital at an alarming rate.

SpaceX is undoubtedly a fascinating undertaking, a testament to human ingenuity and ambition. But to chase this stock at its initial offering would be akin to joining a madcap race, driven by nothing more than speculative fervor. Patience, dear investors, is a virtue. A more sensible opportunity will likely present itself in due course, when the bubble, if bubble it be, has had time to… deflate. One should not mistake enthusiasm for wisdom, nor a dazzling display for sound investment.

For truly, in this grand spectacle, one must ask oneself: are we witnessing the dawn of a new era, or merely the latest iteration of an old folly?
