Marvel Debuts New Non-Binary Hawkeye

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Marvel universe, I must say the introduction of Charli Ramsey as Hawkeye is a breath of fresh air. Growing up, I never had much representation in my favorite comics, so seeing a non-binary, Two-Spirit Native American character like Charli take center stage is nothing short of amazing.

Among Marvel’s most cherished figures, be it in the comic books or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stands Hawkeye. Even without supernatural abilities, his exceptional talent, unwavering resolve, and relatable character endear him to fans everywhere.

Although Clint Barton, or Hawkeye as we know him from comics and movies, is the best recognized, there are other individuals who’ve assumed the role as well.

In the latest installment of “The Ultimates” comic series (issue 5 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri), a new version of Hawkeye from Earth-6160, also known as the Universe of Ultimate, was revealed. This time around, the character is Charli Ramsey, who identifies as non-binary and Two-Spirit Native American.

Although Charli isn’t the original Hawkeye from the comic books, their popularity in the Ultimate Universe adds a fresh and exciting element to the team of superheroes.

Born into the Oglala Band of the Lakota Nation, Charli harbored a longstanding grudge against Roxxon Energy Partners, a sentiment stemming from their father’s fondness for classic westerns. Fast forward to January 2024, they stumbled upon gear designed for Clint Barton, also known as the original Hawkeye, which they perceived as a sign of fate. Adopting the moniker “Hawkeye,” Charli initiated attacks on Roxxon’s operations.

Following a disagreement with Captain America, dispatched by Tony Stark, they later joined forces to defeat Roxxon’s Cleanup Squad. This alliance helped Captain America place his trust in them.

Deniz Camp explained Charli’s non-binary gender identity on social media, using ‘they/them’ pronouns for them. In the story, Camp decided not to highlight this aspect as it seemed fitting with Charli’s character. However, Camp promised that Charli’s non-binary identity will be clearly addressed when it logically fits the storyline without taking center stage.

In the story, there has been much curiosity regarding Charli’s gender identity. I prefer to stick to the narrative when discussing such topics, as it seems unfair to delve beyond the book’s scope. However, I understand how important this matter is to readers, so I feel compelled to acknowledge it.

When I did my research into the water protectors/Standing Rock, something that was emphasized again and again was the importance of queer and “two spirit” organizers to the movement. I wanted to put that into the book.

Indeed, Charli uses they/them pronouns. I tried to be discreet about it, as these details aren’t directly mentioned in the book and I believe Charli wouldn’t want unnecessary attention drawn to it in this particular context. However, we will ensure to clearly establish this when it aligns naturally with the storyline.
