The actor ended up being Guy Pearce. Director Christopher Nolan noticed Pearce while watching his previous work, particularly the film L.A. Confidential. Nolan was struck by how versatile Pearce was as an actor, able to handle a variety of roles.

Nolan realized Pearce was a versatile actor after seeing his work in several films, and felt he had the range to play the part. He was confident Pearce could deliver both the emotional depth and technical skill the role required.
