As a huge movie fan, I was really saddened to read about the awful abuse Paapa Essiedu has been getting since being cast as Snape in the new Harry Potter series. He recently shared in an interview with The Sunday Times that some of the messages he’s received have actually been threatening, which is just completely unacceptable. It’s awful that anyone would react like that to casting news, and I really hope he’s getting the support he needs.
He shared that he’s received death threats, with people telling him to quit or they would murder him. These threats are readily available online, particularly on platforms like Instagram, where he’s seen messages saying someone will come to his home and kill him. Even though he feels physically safe, he admitted the situation is emotionally distressing. He emphasized that no one should face such threats simply for doing their job, especially as he’s just playing a wizard in ‘Harry Potter,’ and it’s understandably affecting him.
Actor Essiedu will be taking on the role of Snape, a pivotal character famously portrayed by Alan Rickman. This casting decision has sparked negative reactions from some fans on social media.
He acknowledged the negative reactions but explained he’s actually using them to drive him forward. He said the criticism “fuels me… and makes me more passionate about making this character my own.” He also emphasized how much it means to him to provide representation, saying he wished he could have seen himself reflected in a place like Hogwarts as a child. The thought that kids like him could now see themselves in that world is a huge source of motivation for him.
The actor revealed he was a big fan of the Harry Potter books as a child, finding them a welcome escape when times were tough. Surprisingly, he never actually saw the movies with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. He explained, “I was a voracious reader, and I just loved ‘Harry Potter.’ The books really helped me escape when things were difficult.”
A fresh series is planned for 2027, featuring a new group of actors. Dominic McLaughlin will star as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron.
Essiedu has committed to a long-term project that he believes will significantly impact his future. He explained, ‘I’ll be 45 when it’s finished, and I know my life will change a lot,’ emphasizing the considerable dedication the project requires.
