Jennifer Lawrence Reveals the One Actor She Was Afraid Working With: “That’s My Worst Nightmare”

Jennifer Lawrence admitted she was very nervous while filming Don’t Look Up with Meryl Streep in 2021. She shared this experience in an interview with Vanity Fair, highlighting that even established actors can feel intimidated when working alongside true Hollywood icons.

Adam McKay’s film starred Jennifer Lawrence as an astronomer and Meryl Streep as the President of the United States. The movie had a huge cast, with actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Mark Rylance, and Ariana Grande. Despite being surrounded by so many famous faces, Lawrence admitted she was most intimidated by working with Streep.

She confessed to being very mindful of her behavior around the actress. In an interview, she explained she deliberately avoided saying or doing anything that could upset the established star. She shared, “I was most worried about bothering Meryl Streep – that was my biggest fear. So, I made a point of only speaking when spoken to, and striving to be as unobtrusive as possible.”

Director Adam McKay observed that Jennifer Lawrence seemed nervous during filming. He noted she was initially quiet and hesitant, particularly when working with Meryl Streep for the first time. She even checked in with him, seemingly seeking guidance on her performance.

He recounted how she repeatedly said she would stay silent and not speak. Then, Meryl Streep arrived, and Jennifer acted like a child, asking him for advice on what to say and do.

Despite some initial anxiety, things relaxed quickly once filming began. Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep eventually developed a comfortable and friendly working relationship, and Lawrence later quipped that her early fears quickly disappeared.

She shared that getting to know Meryl Streep personally changed her initial perception of the actress. She’d previously thought of Streep as unapproachable, but discovered she was actually very easygoing and friendly. They even spent time together outside of work, which helped them build a more comfortable relationship.

It’s natural for actors to feel pressure when working alongside industry legends. Even Jennifer Lawrence, a highly successful actress herself, admitted to feeling nervous while acting with Meryl Streep, who is renowned as one of the greatest and most decorated film actors of all time.
