Arnold Schwarzenegger, now 78, is apparently getting back in shape to reprise his iconic role as Conan the Barbarian in a new movie.
According to the National Enquirer, Arnold Schwarzenegger is working hard to get back in peak physical condition for an upcoming film. A source says his appearance is crucial, as the movie requires him to convincingly portray a powerful, legendary warrior king.
Arnold Schwarzenegger became a major star after playing the character Conan in the early 1980s. The first Conan movie, released in 1982, was a box office hit, and he reprised the role in a sequel two years later. These films were instrumental in launching his Hollywood career.
The upcoming project, nicknamed “King Conan,” has been in development for quite some time. It will feature an older Conan, pulled back into adventure after a long period of peace.
Charles Bronson and Sylvester Stallone were both considered for the part before Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast. But after the filmmakers saw Schwarzenegger in the documentary Pumping Iron, they decided to go with him instead.
The actor reportedly continues to work out at Gold’s Gym Venice, a location with strong ties to his history in bodybuilding. According to a source, he intends to get back into shape for the role there, no matter what it takes. They stated he’s determined to succeed and won’t accept failure.
Sources report he’s committed to a rigorous fitness routine to prepare for the physical challenges of his new role. This is particularly noteworthy given his past health issues. Men’s Health magazine details a history of injuries and several major surgeries, including heart procedures and a hip replacement. He currently relies on a pacemaker.
A Conan reboot with Jason Momoa came out in 2011, but it wasn’t a box office success. Despite his age, Schwarzenegger still enjoys physically demanding roles and stays active. The news of him potentially returning to Conan suggests he isn’t retiring from challenging parts anytime soon.
