James Gunn Welcomes Kyle Chandler To The DCU As Star Of Lanterns; Deets

As a die-hard DC Universe fan with years of comics under my belt and countless hours spent in animated adventures, I must say that the casting of Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in Lanterns is nothing short of brilliant!

In simpler terms, it’s been announced that the DC Universe has chosen a new Green Lantern. On Wednesday, James Gunn, joint CEO of DC Studios, revealed that Kyle Chandler, recognized for his roles in Friday Night Lights and Early Edition, will be portraying Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO live-action series titled Lanterns.

Initially, it was announced around the autumn season, with rumors circulating that Josh Brolin, Matthew McConaughey, and Ewan McGregor were among those being considered for the part.

In this upcoming project, actor Chandler will portray Hal Jordan, a well-known DC Comics figure, alongside Aaron Pierre who has been chosen as John Stewart, another significant Green Lantern character. This casting of Chandler could potentially bring a fresh perspective to the role, which was previously played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 Green Lantern movie.

In a recent social media post, Gunn announced, “Welcome to the DC Universe, Kyle Chandler!” Now, he’s our Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Corps.

Hal Jordan, a character conceived by John Broome and Gil Kane, debuted in Showcase #22 back in 1959. Later on, he became the second individual to assume the role of Green Lantern, succeeding Alan Scott in this capacity.

Hal is presented as a skilled aviation test pilot who receives a potent ring from a fading extraterrestrial, granting him the power to materialize anything his determination allows. The ring functions only when he can master its control.

Hal swiftly rises through the ranks to become one of the Green Lantern Corps’ elite, serving as a cosmic peacekeeper whose mission is to safeguard the entire universe. Additionally, he helps establish the Justice League of America and often teams up with Oliver Queen, also known as Green Arrow, in the world of DC Comics.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a deep connection with Hal Jordan. He’s been through some serious trials and tribulations throughout his comics journey, most notably when he was ensnared by the darkness of Parallax in the ’90s. But like a true Green Lantern, he found the strength to overcome and return to his duty, shining brightly once more.

In a fresh take on the character, Chandler will portray Hal Jordan in Green Lantern, marking his latest live-action interpretation after Howard Murphy’s portrayal in the 1978 TV special Legends of the Superheroes and Ryan Reynolds’ role in the 2011 movie. Previously, Hal Jordan has been voiced by several actors in animated films, with Nathan Fillion and Jonah Hill being the most notable ones.

The detective story, set in reality with an Earth backdrop, is anticipated to be centered around Lanterns. This series will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two Green Lanterns who team up to untangle a sinister enigma nestled within the heart of America. As they peel back layers of secrets, their investigations could potentially impact not only Earth but also the Green Lantern Corps significantly.

Beyond the role of Hal Jordan played by Chandler, it’s been announced that Aaron Pierre will portray John Stewart, a prominent African-American DC Comics character renowned for his heroic deeds.

In the 1970s, Stewart made his debut as a character. He was once a United States Marine before becoming a Green Lantern after being selected for the Corps. The blend of Hal’s seasoned perspective and John’s novel viewpoint promises to result in an intriguing partnership within the series.
