Netflix has shared details about its upcoming live-action “Assassin’s Creed” series. The story will be a new one, taking place in Rome in 64 A.D. during the time of Emperor Nero and the Great Fire. Filming is already underway at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and is expected to last seven months, with the series potentially premiering in 2027.
Johan Renck, the director behind the acclaimed series “Chernobyl,” helms this new project. Joining the already announced cast are new recurring actors Louis McCartney (“The First Shadow”), Mirren Mack (“The Nest,” “The Witcher: Blood Origin”), Youssef Kerkour (“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”), and Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (“Foundation”). Returning cast members include Lola Petticrew, Toby Wallace, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Nabhann Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, and Corrado Invernizzi.

Filming will take place throughout Italy, including at the Cinecittà Studios, as well as in the Lazio region around Rome and the beautiful countryside of Tuscany. The studio has even constructed a large outdoor set recreating the ancient Roman Forum. Generous Italian tax incentives, covering up to 40% of production expenses, are also contributing to the project.
As a total cinema lover, I’m really excited about the team behind this new series! The costumes are being designed by Carlo Poggioli, whose work in films like “The Leopard” and “The New Pope” is just stunning. And Nicola Rosada, who’s worked on Netflix hits like “The Decameron” and “Emily in Paris,” is handling the production side of things. Manuela Cacciamani, the CEO of Cinecittà Studios, shared how thrilled they are to host the production, saying Netflix choosing their studios for such a big, anticipated series is a huge vote of confidence in Cinecittà’s international reputation. She also emphasized how proud she is that the incredibly talented crew and art department are building what sounds like absolutely breathtaking sets.
The latest installment in the “Assassin’s Creed” series takes players to ancient Rome – a first for the popular video game franchise, which has previously been set in locations like Egypt, Greece, Renaissance Italy, feudal Japan, and revolutionary France. With over 230 million copies sold worldwide since 2007, fans can look forward to a new story that still focuses on the series’ signature elements: hidden conflicts and the search for powerful relics known as Pieces of Eden.
