Market Musings: Seriously?

Today’s… Stuff.

  • McCormick and Unilever? You’re kidding me.
  • Amazon’s robots. Of course.
  • Futures are up. Fine. Whatever.

📌 Look, I’m just trying to understand what’s happening. Is that too much to ask?

AI Chip Smuggling? Honestly.

8:15 am SMCI down 25.50%, NVDA barely budging. Which, frankly, is the bigger problem? A 25% drop? Or the lack of a bigger drop? It’s unsettling.

Super Micro Computer (SMCI +1.38%) is apparently in some kind of mess. Wally Liaw, whoever that is, is accused of smuggling chips to China. Billions of dollars worth. And they’re doing it through…Southeast Asia? It’s like a bad spy movie. And now Supermicro’s stock is tanking? It’s just… predictable. They claim it’s a small part of their revenue, like $100 million. A hundred million dollars! That’s not chump change! It’s always the “small” things that get you. And now everyone’s worried about “oversight.” You think? It’s like they’re surprised people try to skirt the rules. What did they think was happening?

  • Compliance Crisis: Auditing scandals? Seriously? Is nothing sacred?
  • Nvidia’s “Losing Proposition”: They claim they don’t support diverted systems. Oh, really? Then explain the $2.5 billion.

Amazon’s “Fire Phone” 2.0? Oh, please.

8:30 am AMZN down slightly. Thank goodness. A little humility is good for them.

Amazon (AMZN 0.53%) is trying the smartphone thing again. “Transformer,” they’re calling it. Like it’s going to magically solve all their problems. Deep “mobile personalization”? What does that even mean? It’s just another way to collect more data, isn’t it? They want to be a “Star Trek” conduit. A conduit! It’s a phone. It makes calls. Or it’s supposed to. They want to steal data from Apple (AAPL 0.54%) and Alphabet (GOOG 1.36%). Everyone’s stealing data these days. It’s exhausting.

  • The Data Moat: They want to integrate Prime benefits into a local AI agent. So they can track everything you buy. Brilliant.
  • Alexa’s Final Form: They want to put Alexa on a phone. So she can listen to you everywhere. It’s a nightmare.

This Morning’s Breakfast News. More like, what’s the point?

7:30 am TSLA down slightly. Good. Maybe they’ll actually focus on building cars instead of… whatever it is they’re doing.

Reuters says Tesla (TSLA 1.05%) is buying solar equipment from China. $2.9 billion worth. Seriously? They want to power everything with solar? Fine. But buying it from China? It’s like they’re actively trying to create problems. And they want 100 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2028. That’s a lot of solar panels. And the Semi truck is getting good reviews? Centered driving position? Who asked for that? It’s just… unnecessary.

  • Aiming for 100 gigawatts: 10% solar capacity? That’s it? And they’re worried about regulatory concerns? You think?
  • Pilot tests of the Semi: Good feedback on the driving position? That’s the highlight?

McCormick and Unilever? What is happening?

7:00 am MKC up slightly, UL up slightly. It’s all just… noise.

Unilever (UL +1.15%) is selling its food division to spice giant McCormick & Co. (MKC 0.60%). $37 billion. It’s like they’re giving up. They want to focus on “beauty and personal care”? Fine. But selling Hellmann’s mayonnaise? That’s a mistake. McCormick will be a “global pantry powerhouse”? Please. It’s just spices. And Jefferies says the unit is worth 9.5 times EBITDA? What does that even mean? It’s all just numbers.

  • Strategic Slimdown: They’re betting on a “pure-play” beauty portfolio? Good luck with that.
  • Spice Giant Scales Up: They’re pairing seasonings with condiment brands? It’s a mess.

Amazon Acquires Rivr. Robots. Of course.

6:45 am AMZN down slightly. Thank goodness.

Amazon (AMZN 0.53%) bought a Swiss robotics startup. Rivr. It’s a four-legged robot on wheels. A “dog on roller skates”? They’re trying to solve the “final 100 yards” of logistics. Of course. It can climb stairs? What is the point? It’s all just… unnecessary complexity. And Jeff Bezos is raising $100 billion for a “manufacturing transformation” fund? Seriously? It’s all just a power play.

  • Last-Mile Margin Play: They want to slash labor costs. Of course.
  • Bezos’s $100B Shadow: He wants to automate everything. Of course.

Top of the Morning. Or, the beginning of the end.

Team Rule Breakers

Whenever something big happens, the markets react. It doesn’t even have to be big, just perceived as big. It’s exhausting. It’s the Middle East. It’s always the Middle East. And oil. Always oil.

Everyone’s trying to profit from it. It’s predictable. Higher oil prices mean higher prices for everything. Transportation costs, if nothing else. And everyone’s asking, “How do I position my portfolio?” Slow down. Prices have already moved. You want to buy low and sell high, right? It’s not that complicated.

ICYMI: Thursday’s Scoreboard. Who cares?

5:45 am ALAB up slightly. Fine.

Before the Opening Bell. Just… noise.

5:00 am

Stock futures are edging higher. It’s always the same. The S&P 500 is on track for its fourth consecutive weekly decline. And everyone’s saying, “It’s a buying opportunity.” It’s always a buying opportunity. The Dow Jones and Nasdaq Composite are teetering on the edge of a correction. And everyone’s pretending it’s not happening.

  • Energy Relief Valve: Brent crude fell. Good.
  • AI Data Center Demand: Meta and Nvidia are anchoring the tech sector. Fine.
