As a long-time fan of Netflix and Jeff Goldblum, I’ve grown accustomed to enjoying a wide variety of content from their platform. However, the recent cancellation of KAOS after just one season has left me feeling more disillusioned than ever.
The series “KAOS” featuring Jeff Goldblum as Zeus debuted on Netflix on August 29. It’s been barely six weeks since then. Normally, even a show with favorable reviews from critics and viewers needs more time to find an audience. However, when all episodes are released simultaneously, it becomes difficult to generate buzz through word of mouth. Despite these challenges, Netflix decided to cancel “KAOS” after only one season without giving it a chance to prove its worth for another season. This early termination of the series makes it increasingly challenging to take a risk on any new shows that Netflix introduces.
Following its late summer premiere, the series KAOS failed to make it past Halloween, having been axed by Netflix. Initially breaking news at The Hollywood Reporter, the cancellation came despite the show attracting a moderate audience of approximately 14.9 million viewers. While this viewership wasn’t catastrophic, it also didn’t impress, ultimately leading to the swift termination of the series, despite its star being a major Hollywood figurehead.
Was it just that KAOS deserved its outcome? Frankly, I’m unsure since I hadn’t managed to watch it prior to this update. Honestly, I was quite excited about catching it, as multiple friends have praised it and suggested I would find it captivating. But now, given the timing of this revelation, watching it seems almost meaningless. Even if it turns out, as they predicted, that I would truly appreciate it, I can’t help but feel that experiencing it now would be anticlimactic.
Unfortunately, it’s no shock that Netflix behaves this way – they tend to terminate their top-performing series prematurely. This pattern makes viewers hesitant to invest time in new releases, as they worry even exceptional shows won’t escape an early cancellation. Therefore, it’s advisable to wait and see if a series has the chance to develop before giving it a try. However, we’re reluctant to do so because we have little faith in Netflix’s commitment to the show’s longevity.
What a cycle! What a business model! But really, what a disappointment.
