Fervent fans of superhero tales, especially those from Marvel, have been captivated by their unique portrayal of heroes and villains in films. Yet, some productions didn’t fare as expected at the cinema. Below is a list of the 10 least successful Marvel movies that you may want to reconsider if you wish to preserve your enthusiasm for action and fantasy films stemming from comic books.

Someone said it best: after Avengers: Endgame, Marvel movies started to decline. In our list of the top 10 worst Marvel movies, The Marvels, starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris, has to be included.
Initially intended as an impressive introduction for Ms. Marvel alongside Captain Marvel, the execution unfortunately fell flat, becoming more of a humorous misfire than anticipated. The script incorporated excessively comedic elements and dance sequences reminiscent of Disney productions, which seemed out of place in an action movie. This unexpected shift towards a Disney-style narrative did not sit well with viewers.
To be truthful, many people watched it just for the post-credit scene, which was indeed epic.
2. Thor: Love and Thunder

A case in point for a Marvel film that didn’t resonate well with audiences is Thor: Love and Thunder, which seemed to lack direction in its narrative by Marvel Studios. Instead of delivering action-packed scenes, the movie opted for excessive humor that mainly appealed to newer Marvel fans rather than the original ones.
It’s important to note that while Thor is traditionally known as the God of Thunder, it’s crucial that he’s not reduced to a mere joke or someone struggling with depression. We’ve seen Joaquin Phoenix deliver an exceptional portrayal of a significant character in the Joker, but let’s strive for a more nuanced and respectful representation of Thor.
As an ardent admirer, let me express my disappointment over “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The introduction of Lady Thor was captivating, but it all seemed futile when she met her demise at the film’s end. Moreover, the plot twist that had Thor relying on children felt out of character, and the subpar CGI face left much to be desired, solidifying its position among the less impressive Marvel productions in my book.
3. The New Mutants

20th Century Studios aimed to excite audiences with fresh mutant characters, yet frequent script changes and reshoots significantly postponed the movie’s release. This delay dampened the initial excitement among superhero enthusiasts.
Despite boasting a gifted ensemble consisting of Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Henry Zaga, the narrative in The New Mutants failed to coalesce effectively. If forced to pick between critically acclaimed and less favorable Marvel films, The New Mutants sadly finds itself within the latter group.
4. Madame Web
February 14, 2024
The Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) began to struggle post-Venom’s release and this downturn persisted with Morbius. Yet, Madame Web could potentially be the most disappointing Marvel film ever made, further plunging the SSU into a grim abyss.
Dakota Johnson’s Marvel premiperformance was hampered by subpar CGI, a flimsy plot, and an extra addition of Peter Parker and his kinship, considered superfluous by many. The film also presented a tribe of arachnid people, all sporting identical Spider-Man costumes, which added nothing to the story.
5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Despite exploring the backstory of a universally cherished superhero character, Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it underperformed significantly compared to earlier X-Men films.
Although it wasn’t the poorest Marvel film, its storyline—similar to many Fox adaptations—was a major hindrance. Despite Hugh Jackman delivering a powerful performance as Logan and the appearance of General Stryker, the movie’s execution fell short. Fans were initially introduced to Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool for the first time, but that portrayal was quite different from the smart-mouthed character fans would grow fond of later on.
6. Morbius

In a more relaxed tone: The movie “Morbius” seems to be another stumble for Sony’s Spider-Man universe, and it doesn’t do as well as “Madame Web.” Despite having the gifted actor Jared Leto in the lead role, the film missed an opportunity to showcase his talents effectively.
One issue that detracts from Morbius being a strong Marvel film is its perplexing guest appearances, which seemed to disrupt the narrative flow of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man timeline.
7. Howard the Duck
August 1, 1986
In some Marvel movies, we’ve caught brief glances of Howard the Duck, but it was actually his own standalone film that initially presented this character. This film narrates the tale of a duck from another planet who unintentionally gets beamed to Earth and ends up in its urban slums.

Though it’s an old cult classic, it’s widely regarded as one of the worst Marvel films ever made.

Over the years, there have been various versions of the Fantastic Four. One version had Ioan Gruffudd as the team leader, while another featured Miles Teller in the role. Unfortunately, the 2015 adaptation did not resonate positively with viewers.
The movie showcased an immense and eye-catching portrayal of Ben Grimm, yet its narrative fell short. Instead of jetting off into space, the team embarked on a journey through another dimension. Dr. Doom, designed to be fearsome and formidable, failed to live up to his intimidating villainous role.
10. Captain America
December 14, 1990
Prior to encountering the eventual Captain America who formed the Avengers, fans initially experienced a budget-restricted portrayal of the character. In this movie, the main character engages in combat with the Red Skull to safeguard the U.S. president.
