Tom Cruise Interrupted ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Filming with Surprise Helicopter Landing

Tom Cruise pulled off a remarkably unexpected stunt on the set of “Star Wars: Starfighter.” Ryan Gosling shared that Cruise actually landed a helicopter right on the set, completely interrupting filming.

Ryan Gosling recently told the story on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He said filming was underway when they had to unexpectedly halt production.

You won’t believe what happened on set! Ryan Gosling was telling this story, and apparently, Tom Cruise actually flew his own helicopter onto where they were filming. They were in the middle of a take when they heard it coming, and everyone had to stop! It was just… Tom Cruise, landing his helicopter. It was totally wild!

He described how someone unexpectedly started filming an action sequence right on the movie set, even grabbing a camera and beginning to shoot. Gosling wasn’t present when it happened, which he found particularly annoying, especially since it occurred on his only day off.

Gosling jokingly said he happened to be off work the day Shawn sent a picture of Shawn and Tom Cruise. The photo showed Cruise covered in mud while filming a scene with Flynn, and Gosling expressed hope it wasn’t intentional that it happened on his day off.

This isn’t the first time Tom Cruise surprised the film crew. Director Shawn Levy previously told The New York Times about a similar visit in November, where Cruise actually helped film a lightsaber fight scene.

I was so impressed to hear about Tom Cruise’s dedication! Apparently, he really threw himself into the work, even standing in mud to get the perfect shot. Director Shawn Levy was actually a little shocked – he told me Steven Spielberg had just been on set, and now here was Tom, personally operating the camera and not even worried about messing up his shoes! It just shows how committed he is to his craft.

Initially, Tom Cruise intended to simply observe the filming. However, producer Jerry Levy playfully proposed that Cruise could operate the camera during a lightsaber duel performed in water. Cruise surprisingly agreed and immediately began filming the scene himself.

I was so excited to hear that Tom Cruise is actually going to be behind the camera for some of the footage in the new movie! Levy said that when we watch it, we’ll know which parts were filmed by him. Seriously, how awesome is that? It’s such a cool touch and really shows his dedication to the project.

“Star Wars: Starfighter” is the latest installment in the popular Star Wars saga. Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, the film is set five years after the conclusion of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”

Ryan Gosling leads the cast of the film, supported by Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

The project’s development started in 2022 when director Levy began discussions about taking it on. Progress was delayed by the 2023 writers’ strike, but resumed afterward. Filming commenced in 2025, with locations in the United Kingdom and Sardinia, Italy, and concluded in December.
