Demi Lovato recently joined a conversation about which Disney Channel stars are the most iconic, essentially who deserves a place on a ‘Mount Rushmore‘ of the network’s history. The discussion started when Raven-Symoné shared her picks on March 10th, focusing on the stars who helped build the Disney Channel into what it is today.
Raven included herself on a list of popular stars from her time, like Hilary Duff and Shia LaBeouf, but she left out Miley Cyrus. She explained that Cyrus rose to fame a bit later. “I love Miley, but she was part of a different era,” Raven said, emphasizing that she was focusing on a specific period of television programming.
The actress also remembered Lee Thompson Young, the star of The Famous Jett Jackson, and his important role in Disney history. She explained, “He’s no longer with us, but he was the first Black actor to lead a show on Disney,” noting that he starred from 1998 to 2001 before his death in 2013.
During a recent appearance on the Chicks in the Office podcast on March 18th, Demi Lovato shared a broader perspective on Disney Channel’s history. While she acknowledged Raven-Symoné’s point of view, she wondered if the channel’s origins should really be traced back to the variety show performers of the early 1990s.
Demi Lovato questioned whether artists like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, who began their careers performing on variety shows, should be given priority when considering the most iconic performers. “Should their history on those shows be the deciding factor?” Lovato pondered, before adding that it might not be.
Lovato realized there’s a distinction between simply appearing on Disney Channel and actually shaping the Disney Channel brand that fans know today. As she explained, “Being on the show didn’t automatically mean they were responsible for making Disney Channel what it became.”
She believes the stars of early 2000s Disney Channel sitcoms truly shaped what the channel became. “Raven and Hilary really paved the way,” she explained, acknowledging their role in creating the channel’s winning formula.
Honestly, when Raven brought up Shia LaBeouf and Even Stevens, I noticed Demi’s reaction was pretty muted. She just said, “I’m okay on that one,” and didn’t really say anything else about it, which I found interesting considering all the controversy around him. It felt like she didn’t want to get into it, and I can understand that, but it was definitely noticeable.
I really agree with Lovato’s point – this network has changed so much over time that it’s too simple to say only four people defined it. I think those who started it all deserve recognition on their own, because without their early work, none of what came after would have been possible. They laid the groundwork for everything, and that’s special.
She explained that earlier stars ‘paved the way’ for her success, acknowledging those who came before. This realization helped her suggest a new lineup showcasing artists from her own successful period in Disney entertainment.
As a huge fan of pop music from the late 2000s and early 2010s, it’s really interesting to hear Demi Lovato talk about who she thinks the biggest stars of that era were. She basically said the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and Selena Gomez would be on her ‘Mount Rushmore’ of that generation. And, humbly, she’s hoping to be up there with them too – she even added, ‘hopefully me!’ when listing the four most influential artists of the time. It’s sweet and shows how she sees herself as part of that iconic group.
