A new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has excited fans by confirming Jim Carrey will return as Dr. Robotnik, despite speculation about his retirement. The trailer begins with Amy Rose discovering the Chaos Emeralds, followed by a warning from Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik: “You think your world is safe, but your time is about to run out. The chaos has only just begun.”
Okay, the teaser trailer showed us who’s back and who’s joining the fun! Ben Schwartz is still the voice of Sonic, which is awesome, and Idris Elba is going to be Knuckles – seriously, perfect casting! Plus, Colleen O’Shaughnessey is returning as Tails, and that makes me so happy. It’s great to see the original voice cast sticking around!
The movie’s cast also includes Keanu Reeves as Shadow, with James Marsden and Tika Sumpter returning as Tom and Maddie Wachowski. Kristen Bell will voice Amy Rose, and Metal Sonic—briefly shown at the end of the last film—will appear. Eagle-eyed fans have even spotted a nod to the ‘Sonic Boom’ series in the design of the Chaos Emeralds.
The countdown to chaos has begun. 💎 #SonicMovie4 – only in theatres March 19, 2027.

Jim Carrey’s decision to return to acting has surprised many, as he had hinted at retirement in the past. After finishing ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ in 2022, he stated he was likely retiring, though he left the door open for a truly exceptional script – something he described as being ‘written in gold ink’ and having significant meaning for audiences. He said he was taking a break but wouldn’t rule out a return for the right project.
Jim Carrey explained his return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, acknowledging that money was a factor. He jokingly said, “I came back because I get to play a genius – though that’s a bit of a reach! – and, honestly, I’ve made a lot of purchases and need the income.”
The actor shared that he cherishes his peaceful life away from the spotlight, enjoying painting and his spiritual practice. He also expressed a surprisingly content sentiment – something he admits most celebrities wouldn’t say – that he feels he’s achieved enough, and is happy with who he is.
The next Sonic the Hedgehog movie is scheduled for release on March 19, 2027. A separate movie is also in the works for 2028, and many fans believe it will feature Shadow the Hedgehog as the main character.
