As a seasoned gamer who has seen his fair share of cinematic adaptations of video games, I must say that watching the unfolding drama surrounding ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ feels all too familiar. It seems like yet another instance where Hollywood tries to cash in on a successful franchise by stretching it beyond its limits, much like when they tried to make a Street Fighter movie with Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile (a decision that still haunts my dreams).
Today officially kicks off ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ yet some enthusiasts had a sneak peek of the movie when it was first screened at the Venice Film Festival a month before its cinematic premiere.
Well, as a gamer speaking candidly, I have to admit that the early responses to this upcoming game have been predominantly unfavorable. Frankly, there’s been a fair amount of doubt surrounding Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn and questions about it being categorized as a musical, despite what Todd Phillips claims (though he insists it’s not).
As a passionate fan, I must admit that the online response to this movie has been predominantly critical. The Rotten Tomatoes score seems to be on a downward spiral, dropping from 48% yesterday to a current 39% among critics. It’s not just the critic’s opinion; audiences are also expressing their disapproval, bringing the audience rating down to 38%.
Considering the relatively small estimated initial box office earnings, it seems likely that the movie will not do well, particularly since the first one was so successful.
Here are some of the reviews:
If Folie à Deus focused on a twisted love story within music, it might have been remarkable in a limited, character-centric manner. Regrettably, Phillips seems determined to make these Joker films convey significant messages about contemporary society.
Caroline Siede, Girl Culture
Todd Phillips has never managed to write a plausible female character. Why start now?
Wenlei Ma, The Nightly
The narrative was sparse, and over half the film consisted of singing scenes, which gave it a distinctly musical feel.
Josh
Awful do not see, every time it started to get good they would start singing

It appears that ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ likely won’t get a follow-up movie if it continues on its present course. Yet, this might not be significant because Todd Phillips himself has declared that he’s done working within the DC universe.
The director swiftly debunked any speculation regarding a solo movie featuring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
For me, this movie doesn’t seem to align with its direction. I had felt that my journey in the DC Universe was limited to those two films.

Initially, ‘Joker’ was designed as a standalone movie, but following its release, there were claims that ‘Joker 3’ wouldn’t happen. Interestingly, these same assertions were made after the first film. However, Warner Bros. had ambitions for ‘Joker’ to kickstart a DC Black series of films.
In June 2022, Todd Phillips started working on a follow-up film, and production officially commenced at that time. Later in the year, Lady Gaga and Zazie Beetz signed up to be part of the cast. Filming took place from December 2022 through April 2023, with locations spanning New York City, Los Angeles, and Belleville, New Jersey.
