Hulu has cancelled the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, New Sunnydale, before it could even begin production. Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed the cancellation was primarily due to one executive’s dislike of the original series, which left fans outraged. Gellar shared this information while promoting her new movie, Ready or Not: Here I Come, at SXSW. An article in Variety detailed the plans for Chloé Zhao’s reboot and explained why Hulu decided not to move forward with the project.
What Was Going to Happen in the Buffy Reboot?

The planned series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, wasn’t going to focus on Buffy Summers herself. Instead, it would have followed a new group of characters—the next generation of Slayers. Sarah Michelle Gellar was set to reprise her role, mentoring a 16-year-old named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The pilot episode was filmed in Los Angeles over the summer, and initially, Buffy only appeared briefly at the very end.
A recent article in Variety explores why Hulu decided not to move forward with the Buffy reboot, and it seems like a big mistake. With a passionate existing fanbase, the return of a fan-favorite character, and acclaimed director Chloé Zhao involved – especially after her success with the Oscar-nominated Hamnet – the show seemed destined to succeed. According to sources, Hulu apparently felt the reboot wasn’t broad enough in its appeal to attract a mainstream audience.
The pilot episode introduces Nova, a shy 16-year-old who learns she’s a Slayer. In Sunnydale, people don’t really know much about Slayers. Nova quickly proves her abilities by defeating two vampires during a town celebration called “Vampire Weekend.” The episode ends with a shocking twist: all the vampires buried in the original series finale are resurrected. Sarah Michelle Gellar appears briefly with a single line, hinting at a larger role in future episodes. Overall, the pilot delivers everything fans hoped for in a continuation of Buffy.
The Real Reason Why Hulu Scrapped the Buffy Reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar publicly expressed her sadness about the canceled Buffy reboot, criticizing Hulu while commending Joss Whedon. It’s now been revealed that Craig Erwich, the president of Hulu Originals, was the executive responsible for the cancellation.
Sarah Michelle Gellar explained that revisiting a show as popular as Buffy was incredibly challenging, both for fans and for herself and Joss Whedon. She described how difficult it was to move forward knowing that one of the network executives openly admitted to never having watched the original series, highlighting the obstacles they faced from the very beginning.
People familiar with the show told Variety that the reboot was beyond saving. Despite her talent, Saffron Cassidy Zhao wasn’t the right fit for the series. The pilot episode also suffered from limited footage and failed to make a strong impact. Another problem was a perceived lack of focus on the main character. Hulu decided that the recent revisions by the Zuckermans weren’t sufficient to fix the issues, and ultimately canceled the rewrite. Sarah Michelle Gellar still supports Zhao’s work on the project.
She shared that Chloé helped her realize how deeply she cares for her and how important she is to everyone here.
It’s unclear exactly why Buffy: New Sunnydale was cancelled, and many fans are disappointed. There’s still a chance a different team could bring the show back someday, and other companies are interested in the franchise. However, 20th Century seems determined to keep control. Even if the show could be revived, it’s uncertain whether Sarah Michelle Gellar would return without Michelle Trachtenberg, given their past issues. Hopefully, the possibility of a future Buffy isn’t completely gone.
