As an ardent fan of Sebastian Stan‘s versatile acting skills, I found his latest role as Donald Trump in The Apprentice to be nothing short of mesmerizing. His ability to embody such a polarizing figure with such finesse is truly commendable.
In a recent disclosure, Sebastian Stan spoke about how people initially discouraged him from playing the contentious former U.S. president Donald Trump in the upcoming Ali Abbasi biographical drama film titled The Apprentice. Stan also recounted his initial response upon securing the role and revealed that he found the apprehensions and concerns regarding the part to be surprisingly ‘inspiring.’ Delve deeper for more insights!
Recently, Sebastian Stan shared insights from his role as Donald Trump in The Apprentice, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. In this open conversation, he also reminisced about initial attempts by others to dissuade him from portraying this contentious character on screen.
As suggested by the movie’s summary, The Apprentice portrays a young Donald Trump, full of ambition and seeking to make a name for himself as the determined second son of a wealthy family in 1970s New York. He becomes captivated by Roy Cohn, the ruthless lawyer who played a significant role in shaping the Donald Trump we recognize today.
At first, when Stan was given the opportunity to play a younger Trump, he found it hard to imagine himself in that role. He admitted, “It’s peculiar, I had similar feelings about several projects I’ve taken on before.” He further explained, “My initial thought was, ‘Wow, how on earth am I going to pull this off?’
The actor from Gossip Girl mentioned that some individuals advised him against accepting the role, as they argued he didn’t look like Trump. He also pointed out that there were concerns about his safety and that he should avoid offending half of the country by playing this part.
According to the scriptwriter, Gabriel Sherman, he revealed to the media outlet that various other performers declined the part due to fear of tackling it. Yet, Stan saw this fear as strangely inspiring instead.
In simpler terms, Jeremy Strong, Sebastian Stan’s co-star, explained to a publication that “This isn’t just a film about two evil characters or monsters, but about two individuals. The movie doesn’t aim to portray these people as villains. Instead, it seeks to explore where they came from and how they turned into the people they became.
Stan pointed out that the narrative had elements reminiscent of a romantic tale. He shared that one of his most cherished scenes at the start was when Strong said, “I represent a character called Roy, while you portray a character named Donald.
The actor added, “I’m hoping that this film encourages people to rediscover their innate human compassion.
Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice will be released in theaters on October 11, 2024.
