Is Aubrey Plaza in AGATHA ALL ALONG an Amalgam of these Marvel Comics Characters?

As someone who has spent countless hours delving into the intricate tapestry of Marvel lore, I must admit that the clues pointing towards Rio Vidal being none other than Death herself are as clear as day to me. The visual cues, from her black hood to her distinctive curved dagger, are too significant to be mere coincidence. And let’s not forget the comics, where characters are often amalgamated and reimagined in ways that keep us guessing.

Among the captivating characters in the show “Agatha All Along”, Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vidal, stands out as one of the most intriguing, ranking high on the list of scene-stealers. Despite her prominent role, we still don’t have a comprehensive understanding of her. What we do know is that she possesses immense power and shares a complicated history with Agatha Harkness, which culminated in an intense fight reminiscent of action films like “Kill Bill” in the opening episode. Her name, likely a pseudonym, roughly means “River of Life.” There are hints suggesting that Rio and Agatha had a past romantic involvement, but the specifics remain shrouded in mystery.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice some intriguing hints suggesting that Rio Vidal might not be your average witch. When she emphatically declares “I’m not just any green witch, I’m THE Green Witch” in an eerie tone during episode four, it sets off alarms. Could she possibly be Marvel Comics‘ embodiment of Death itself? Or perhaps the infamous Blackheart? Or even a fascinating blend of both characters? The pieces of evidence we’ve gathered seem to point towards Rio being far more complex than her initial appearance might suggest. And if my theories hold water, understanding her true identity could reveal connections to the rich tapestry of Marvel Comics mythology.

Who Is Mistress Death in the Marvel Comics?

In the world of comics, Death – often referred to as Mistress Death or Lady Death – is an ancient cosmic entity, predating even the universe’s birth. Created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich, she made her debut in Captain Marvel #26, published in 1973. Much like her name implies, she is the tangible manifestation of death itself. Death shares similarities with other eternal entities within the Marvel Universe, such as Eternity or the Living Tribunal. These beings have briefly appeared in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions; Eternity was spotted in Thor: Love and Thunder, while there was a quick cameo of the Living Tribunal in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given this pattern, it seems appropriate for Death to make an appearance within the MCU as well.

Thanos and Deadpool Both Love Death

In the comic books, Death often takes on a skeletal figure with a black hood or a Caucasian woman with dark hair as an alternate appearance. The Mad Titan Thanos had an intense infatuation for her, and he performed his famous snap, eliminating half of all life in the universe, to win her affection. However, Death remained unimpressed by him and consistently rejected his advances, showing she was beyond his reach. In essence, she was superior to him.

In due time, she confessed to harboring a certain affection for him. Subsequently, they pooled their forces to bring forth a being known as the Rot. Death was absent from both “Infinity War” and “Endgame”, and Thanos had fresh reasons for his snap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s hoping that if Rio truly represents Death, she playfully remarks on Thanos’ fixation with her at some point. Interestingly enough, a romance seemed to sprout between Death and Deadpool, an unlikely duo. Ironically, given his immortal status, Deadpool may fit into the category of yearning for something unattainable.

The Clues Spelling Out That Rio Vidal Is Death

From the beginning of Agatha All Along, there have been numerous hints that Rio Vidal might actually be Death. For instance, when she attacks Agatha’s house in the first episode, she is seen wearing a black hood. In episode four, while on the Witches’ Road, she dons a hood with a ’70s glam touch. Her unique curved dagger is also reminiscent of the image of Death found in Lilia’s Tarot deck. It’s hard to ignore this apparent connection, suggesting that Rio Vidal may be embodying Death itself.

In my gaming world, it’s clear that Rio harbored feelings for Agatha at one point, and I can sense a deeper story between them unfolding in the upcoming episodes. When speaking about her “scar,” Rio refers to the emotional turmoil she endures when she must perform her duty as Death and cause pain to those she cares about. It seems that this duty required Rio to claim the soul of Nicholas Scratch, Agatha’s son, possibly in exchange for the Darkhold. This task left a lasting mark on their relationship.

Rio Vidal May Also Be Blackheart

It’s possible that Rio could be more than just the villainous character from the comics. The Marvel Cinematic Universe often blends characters together. When Lilia presented Agatha with a list of names for her coven, it was the fifth name, an image of a black heart, that seemed to startle Agatha. In the comic books, Blackheart is said to be Mephisto’s offspring, born from the dark energy Mephisto collected from a place notorious for its numerous murders. Blackheart often appears as a major antagonist to the hero Ghost Rider. Originally hailing from a Hell dimension, Mephisto exiled him to our worldly plane.

When Rio emerges, she crawls up from the earth, which was previously the resting place of Sharon Davis (Mrs. Hart), following her tragic passing. She suggests that she might originate from a hidden dimension. It’s possible that this hidden realm is none other than Hell itself. Perhaps Death needs a physical form in our world. In the comics, she has possessed human hosts before, such as when interacting with the Scarlet Spider. Her physical manifestation could be Blackheart, the offspring of Mephisto. After all, we finally heard the name Mephisto mentioned in this series, which might not have been just for character introduction in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Over the next few weeks, we can expect to learn more about Rio Vidal/Green Witch and uncover her true identity.
