Did Will Smith Farting On Men In Black Set Cause A Three-Hour Evacuation? Director Barry Sonnenfeld Weighs In

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for behind-the-scenes stories, I can confidently say that the Men in Black set was a hotbed of unforgettable moments, and Will Smith’s flatulent escapades are certainly at the top of that list. Having worked on numerous productions myself, I can attest that no one wants to be stuck in a tiny, air-tight pod with a Will Smith fart – not even on the Disney ranch!

During filmmaking, the cast and crew often create numerous cherished moments that they carry with them once a project wraps up. One such unforgettable incident experienced by Barry Sonnenfeld, director of Men In Black, involves Will Smith passing gas on set – an event so potent it necessitated a three-hour evacuation.

In an appearance on the “Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa” podcast (as reported by Variety), the director shared a humorous tale that took place during filming, when Smith and his fellow actor Tommy Lee Jones were preparing to shoot the scene involving the use of a unique government agency vehicle.

In this particular setting, both performers found themselves enclosed within a pod, serving as a means of capturing the scene. The director emphasized that security measures were in place to ensure it wouldn’t fall or accidentally open. Interestingly, Sonnenfeld recalled hearing Will Smith, the Bad Boys star, express an apology to his fellow actor unexpectedly.

He stated, “I told him to start filming, and then I heard Will Smith exclaim, ‘Oh dear God, I’m sorry. Tommy, I’m sorry. Baz, bring the ladder.’ After that, Tommy could be heard saying, ‘It’s alright, Will. No problems, Will. Don’t worry, Will.’ To be honest, I’m not sure what happened there, correct?

They handed the ladder to Jones who then grabbed it with his foot and swiftly descended. The director went on, “Will Smith is flatulent, some people just are. And it’s not advisable to be in a tiny, airtight space with a Will Smith fart. You wouldn’t even want to sit next to him at the Disney ranch.

It appears the blockbuster movie we’re discussing became a huge success, boasting numerous unforgettable behind-the-scenes moments. However, nobody expected to learn about Will Smith’s flatulence anecdote in 2024 – quite an unexpected addition to trivia!

Following the blockbuster performance of the film, an additional three sequels were made within the same series. Besides the original cast, Tony Shalhoub, Rip Torn, David Cross, Linda Fiorentino, Tim Blaney, Thom Fountain, Drew Massey, and numerous others joined the 1997 movie’s ensemble.
