Initially, Charlie Puth believed the mention of his name in Taylor Swift’s song from her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, was a prank or an AI-generated edit. In the title track of her hit album, Swift sings, “We decided Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.” Recently, Puth shared that he found it hard to believe when he first heard this line, thinking it wasn’t true.

Initially taken aback, he nevertheless appreciated the shout-out. Upon listening to a fragment of Taylor Swift’s song, it dawned on him that the lyrics were so clever they could only have been penned by a human mind. Thus, he concluded it must be a testament to Taylor’s intelligence and creativity.

In a recent interview with SiriusXM, Puth expressed, “It’s quite the compliment, by the way. I thought it was AI because AI just seems to be everywhere. Then, I heard a clip of it and thought, that’s way too smart for AI; that’s way too clever—the way that it rhymed.”

In a previous conversation with Rolling Stone, further exploration revealed that Puth learned about Taylor Swift acknowledging a line to him from a friend. The friend informed him about the shout-out after listening to a sneak peek of Taylor’s song, but Puth initially disregarded it.

Instead, he assumed that she might have mentioned him during her interviews or press appearances, but at the back of his mind, he entertained the possibility that it was all a prank – perhaps someone was attempting to deceive him by asking a renowned musician to discuss his own work.

Later on, Puth shared with the media outlet, “It’s quite exhilarating to earn validation from an artist I’ve admired for so long, someone who continues to inspire me.
