Can the MCU’s Newest Powerhouse, Sentry, Outmatch the Original Avengers?

As a seasoned Marvel fan and longtime comic book enthusiast, I must say that the introduction of Sentry into the MCU is a masterstroke by the creators. With his immense power levels, Sentry is undeniably one of the most formidable characters in the Marvel universe, rivaling even cosmic entities like Galactus and Doctor Doom.

The unveiling of “Thunderbolts” marks significant turning points in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Primarily, it introduces us to the Thunderbolts, a fresh squad with an analog to DC’s Suicide Squad.

Additionally, what stands out is that it will introduce the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s strongest superhero so far – Sentry – expanding an impressive lineup of characters.

In the world of comics, Sentry possesses extraordinary abilities that are yet to be fully realized. His powers span across molecular, energy, and reality manipulation, making him a force unlike any other in the Marvel universe. Not only is he physically stronger, faster, and more durable than most villains and superheroes, but his Void form adds an additional level of destruction.

It’s quite improbable that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will incorporate all of Sentry’s abilities, and there are valid reasons behind this. In the near future, you’ll understand why the character necessitates a considerable toning down for his on-screen representation.

We’ve compared Sentry to the original Avengers lineup (plus Scarlet Witch and Thanos, due to popular demand) to illustrate why a comic-accurate version of Sentry would be too overwhelming for the MCU.

1. Sentry easily overpowers Iron Man in no time

Although Tony Stark didn’t possess any supernatural abilities, his cutting-edge technology and unyielding determination made him a formidable force against some of the most daunting cosmic perils. Regrettably, even these strengths would prove insufficient when confronting Sentry.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight the extraordinary abilities of Sentry. With his molecular manipulation prowess, he has the power to break down Iron Man’s suit—and Tony Stark himself—into anything my imagination can conceive, ranging from an ant to a piece of paper. Moreover, he crafts constructs with just his mind, and these creations can even be sentient beings. To top it off, Sentry demonstrates biokinesis, which is quite simply mind-boggling!

Though the limits of Sentry’s manipulation over molecules remain unclear, there’s hope in that he often finds it hard to handle these powers. This weakness could be capitalized on by the Avengers, but it also implies that Sentry possesses the power to obliterate planets with just a casual gesture.

In any case, Iron Man simply wouldn’t have a defense against that kind of power.

2. Captain America wouldn’t stand a chance

Similar to Captain America (Steve Rogers), Sentry derives his powers from an extraordinarily potent super-serum. This serum has been intensified by a factor of 100,000, giving him the might of a million solar explosions.

Rogers exhibits superior human physical capabilities that surpass the pinnacle of human performance, but Sentry boasts a strength over 100 tons, speeds faster than light, and remarkable invincibility.

In this face-off, I’d be able to win just by relying on my raw strength; Sentry’s extraordinary powers wouldn’t even come close to overpowering Captain America, let alone be necessary.

3. Thor would be a formidable challenge

Without a doubt, Thor stands out among the initial Avengers team due to his extraordinary physical prowess that’s been amplified, and an extensive collection of mystical abilities. If pitted against Sentry, Thor would certainly present a formidable adversary. However, in the end, it is Sentry who would come out on top.

Beyond having the knack for manipulating molecules, Sentry also boasts an impressive repertoire of energy control. This lets him command both shadows and light, and he can even launch forceful energy bursts and psychic strikes. It might take a while, but eventually, Sentry will outmatch the God of Thunder.

4. The Hulk isn’t as big of a threat as you might think

Though many believe the Hulk to be the most physically powerful Avenger, the version of Professor Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t demonstrate the same degree of raw might. Interestingly, Sentry’s strength actually equals or even surpasses that of the Hulk.

In the world of comics, Sentry possesses a remarkable strength that allows him to dismantle formidable enemies such as Carnage and Ares. Furthermore, when transformed into his Void form, he exhibited an incredible power, even managing to shatter the Hulk’s limbs.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can’t help but ponder less about who might emerge victorious between Sentry and Professor Hulk, but rather, how long it would take for Sentry’s overwhelming power to fully subdue the mighty Professor Hulk.

5. Black Widow gets destroyed

Much like Captain America (Steve Rogers), Black Widow seems to primarily rely on plot protection rather than possessing significant abilities. Compared to Sentry, it’s evident that Black Widow struggles and is typically outmatched in almost all possible scenarios.

6. Hawkeye gets destroyed

Much like Captain America and Black Widow, Hawkeye stands little to no chance of going up against Sentry and living through the fight.

Though Hawkeye may hold a slight advantage due to his ability to attack from afar with antimatter arrows that could temporarily hinder Sentry, this edge is insignificant. Once Sentry detects Hawkeye or approaches closer, the contest is essentially decided in Sentry’s favor.

7. Scarlet Witch, as a glass cannon, stands little chance

Absolutely, we’re all acquainted with the House of M narrative. Yet, this is Marvel Cinematic Universe Wanda we’re talking about. Unfortunately, her ability to manipulate reality won’t shield her from Sentry. It’s thought that his powers involve a phase-shift in his molecular structure, making him partially out of step with our usual reality. The serum he received initiates a photosynthetic process that amplifies his awareness, granting him the power to reshape reality.

Beyond simply having greater physical strength than Wanda, Sentry is also capable of opposing her ability to alter reality, should it affect him in the first place. Given these factors, it’s reasonable to conclude that Sentry would emerge victorious in a confrontation with Wanda.

8. Thanos only has a chance with the Infinity Gauntlet

Thanos is in a much weaker position without the Infinity Gauntlet, particularly considering his MCU version is less potent compared to his comic book character. He’s unable to match Sentry’s extraordinary powers. But, if the Infinity Stones are involved, it becomes uncertain whether Sentry could endure their immense power. Given that the Infinity Stones are stronger than reality itself, they might tip the balance in Thanos’ favor.

What prompted the MCU to introduce Sentry at this time?

It seems reasonable to assume that the plot of this introduction might originate from the fact that Sentry’s character appears to be incredibly powerful. Given that Sentry was not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe during ‘Infinity War’, it would be challenging to imagine a substantial conflict, given that Thanos, without the fully assembled Infinity Gauntlet, is generally quite weak.

Introducing Sentry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to establish a new adversary who may outmatch even Thanos and the Infinity Stones. However, it’s likely that his powers will be scaled back for storytelling reasons. In actuality, only cosmic-level villains such as Galactus could potentially pose a significant threat to him.

Given characters like Galactus, Doctor Doom, and possibly Knull looming ahead, it’s understandable why Sentry wasn’t initially featured in previous tales, as his immense power could eclipse lesser or street-level adversaries.
