As I delve into the fascinating world of these talented actors and their roles spanning across multiple universes, I can’t help but marvel at the intricate web they weave with their performances!
2025 is shaping up to be a crucial year for the revamped DC Universe (DCU), successor to the old DCEU. While Creature Commandos will kick things off, James Gunn and Peter Safran have highlighted that the upcoming Superman film signifies the real commencement of the DCU’s new era.
Although specifics about the storyline are still not fully disclosed, hints from set leaks and formal announcements suggest a captivating ensemble. Particularly intriguing is that Gunn has recruited a number of performers who previously starred in competing Marvel productions.
Consequently, we’ve put together a rundown featuring ‘Superman’ actors who have been involved in Marvel productions before.
1. Frank Grillo – Rick Flag Sr (DCU) / Crossbones (MCU)
Frank Grillo is primarily recognized for his portrayal of the antagonist Crossbones in the movies “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Endgame.” It’s been publicly disclosed that the actor came close to being dismissed by Marvel on several occasions due to unintentionally disclosing confidential information.
Despite it being unlikely for his character to reappear in the Marvel Cinatic Universe, Grillo is steadily earning a strong presence within the DCU. He has been confirmed to play Rick Flag Jr., appearing both in animated form in “Creature Commandos” and live-action in “Superman” and the second season of “Peacemaker.
2. Isabela Merced – Hawkgirl (DCU) / Anya Corazon (SSU)
In her first attempt at the superhero genre, Merced’s role as Anya Corazon in Madame Web didn’t pan out positively. The movie received negative criticism from critics and failed to draw a good number of viewers at the box office. Yet, when one door closes, another opens.
Among the initial actors introduced by James Gunn, Merced is set to play the character Hawkgirl, specifically taking on the role of Kendra Saunders.
3. Sean Gunn – Kraglin (MCU) / Maxwell Lord (DCU)
Sean Gunn frequently works alongside his sibling on diverse ventures. Notably, he’s well-known for his portrayal of Kraglin Obfonteri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Well, here I am, gearing up to step into a new role! It seems Gunn’s taking on Maxwell Lord in the DCU next, a character known for causing trouble for both Supergirl and Superman. Plus, there’s a chance I’ll be back as the same character in Creature Commandos. Exciting times ahead!
4. Nathan Fillion – Master Karja (MCU) / Guy Gardner (DCU)
Nathan Fillion holds multiple roles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though his most notable is that of Master Karja in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Additionally, Fillion was among the initial cast members revealed for the upcoming Superman film, where he will embody Guy Gardner, a well-known Green Lantern character.
5. Mikaela Hoover – Floor (MCU) / Cat Grant (DCU)
Mikaela Hoover, similar to Nathan Fillion, has assumed multiple roles within the Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series. In the initial film, she appeared as Nova Prime’s Aide, and in the third movie, she lent her voice and motion capture for the character Floor. Upcoming, she will take on the role of Cat Grant in the new Superman production.
6. Edi Gathegi – Darwin (Fox X-Men Franchise) / Mr. Terrific (DCU)
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially began, Gathegi left an indelible mark by bringing to life one of the most formidable mutants, Darwin, in the movie “X-Men: First Class”.
In the DC Universe, Gathegi has been cast in a significant part as Mr. Terrific. This has been revealed through set secrets and photographs. Unlike many superheroes, he doesn’t possess extraordinary powers. Instead, he employs T-spheres that grant him a variety of abilities such as flight and invincibility to technological attacks, among others.
7. Nicholas Hoult – Beast (Fox X-Men Franchise) / Lex Luthor (DCU)
In various X-Men movies like X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix, Nicholas Hoult took on the role of Hank McCoy, better known as Beast. His next acting gig will be playing Lex Luthor, the longtime adversary of Superman, in an upcoming Superman film.
8. Skyler Gisondo – Howard Stacy (‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Franchise’) / Jimmy Olsen (DCU)
Skyler Gisondo played a supporting part as Howard, Gwen Stacy’s brother, in the Spider-Man movies. For the new Superman film, he is set to assume a more prominent character: Jimmy Olsen.
9. Alan Tudyk – Alistair Krei (‘Big Hero 6’) / Unnamed Cameo (‘Deadpool 2’)
Actor Alan Tudyk, known for voicing Doctor Phosphorus in the series Creature Commandos, is also expected to appear in the cast of Superman. Previously, he lent his voice to Alistair Krei in Disney’s animated movie Big Hero 6 and made a brief appearance in Deadpool 2 as a character tasered by Josh Brolin’s Cable, portraying a redneck.
10. Wendell Pierce – Unknown role (MCU) / Perry White (DCU)
In the forthcoming film, Pierce will take on the role of Perry White, the stern but fair boss of Superman. Known for his commitment to journalistic honesty, Perry frequently navigates the difficulties of reporting on superhuman exploits, leaning on his team to handle stories about Superman and other extraordinary occurrences.
Lately, news broke out that Pierce will be part of the acting ensemble for the forthcoming Thunderbolts film; however, details about the character he’ll portray are still under wraps.
