As an ardent admirer of Andrew Garfield‘s captivating performances, I find myself deeply moved by his heartfelt return to the silver screen with “We Live in Time.” His words about feeling looser, less precious, and more joyful resonate profoundly, painting a picture of an artist reborn.
Actor Andrew Garfield, who took a brief hiatus from the spotlight for some well-deserved relaxation, is all set to reappear on the big screen with much fanfare in the eagerly awaited romantic drama We Live in Time alongside Florence Pugh. Following his successful role in Tick Tick Boom, Garfield has shared insights about the gratifying aspects of his return to acting.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Garfield shared that he now feels more relaxed, less guarded, and brimming with more happiness.
The Oscar nominee was surfing and feating around the Spanish coastal town over the last week and spent time with his old high school friends. “I’ve been a proper tourist,” he added. Penned by Nick Payne and directed by John Crowley, We Live in Time is a decade-spanning romantic drama, revolving around Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield).
In this heartfelt and emotional story, the main characters face life challenges, including one character’s cancer diagnosis, while they care for their young daughter. Initially thrilled about the opportunity to collaborate with director Crowley again since their 2007 project Boy A, the actor became particularly enthusiastic when he learned of Payne’s involvement in the film.
He finds the writing captivating, noting its delicate blend of humor, emotion, and sensitivity. It’s a tough act to pull off, he admitted. That’s why the screenplay for We Live in Time resonated deeply with him, as he mused, “This could turn out to be something truly enchanting.
Additionally, he elaborated on how Pugh’s involvement in the film significantly contributed to the final outcome as she seemed perfectly suited for the role of Almut. This was primarily due to the fact that the actress from Dune could skillfully inject depth, roughness, and a subtle sense of lightness into the character, which was crucial.
Garfield joked that those things were exactly what interrupted his break from work, but later reflected that the movie unexpectedly fit into his sabbatical. He pointed out that it was perfect timing when the script arrived at his home, as he was feeling emotionally similar at the time.
In a moment that felt incredibly fitting, I stumbled upon the script and thought, “This mirrors exactly what’s happening within my heart,” he explained. The film titled “We Live in Time” which made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September is set to hit UK theaters on January 1, 2025.
