The first trailer for Dune: Part Three is here, along with a bunch of new character posters, and fans are excited! However, those unfamiliar with the source material might be a little lost. The movie is based on Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel, Dune Messiah, which is the sequel to his famous Dune. Director Denis Villeneuve has stated that Messiah is his favorite book in the series, but it’s quite different in tone and scope from the first novel, which formed the basis for the first two films.
So, I’m really excited for Dune: Part Three, and if you’re curious about what the first teaser hints at, our resident Dune expert, Matt Caron (he’s basically our Kwisatz Haderach!), breaks it all down in the video below. He really gets into what we can expect.

The story unfolds during a critical period in Paul’s rule, when everyone expects him to produce an heir. Simultaneously, a secret plot against him begins to take shape. Paul, known as Muad’Dib, also struggles to control his extraordinary powers and desperately tries to change the disastrous future he has foreseen.
The trailer begins with a scene that appears to be a flashback, showing Paul and Chani during the events of Dune: Part Two. They’re talking about potential names for their child, and Chani is wearing a blue scarf called a nezhoni. These scarves are traditionally worn by Fremen women who have had a son, or are in a relationship. Because Chani is wearing the scarf while discussing a child with Paul, many fans believe she was actually pregnant during Dune: Part Two.
If Paul and Chani have a daughter, Paul wants to name her Ghanima, which is a Fremen word meaning “spoils of war.” In the book Dune, Paul received a ghanima after defeating Jamis, but this victory came at a significant price. It remains to be seen what sacrifices Paul and Chani will have to make if their daughter is born.
Chani proposes naming their son Leto, after Paul’s father, if they have one. In the novel Dune, Paul and Chani do have a son during Paul’s conflict with the Harkonnens, but sadly, the Emperor’s Sardaukar soldiers kill him.
By the end of this scene, we see a changed Bald Atreides – now with a shaved head and all alone. It’s been years since his peaceful moment with Sihaaya. The trailer shows several battles from Paul’s efforts to secure his power, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly how much time has passed. These battles might be flashbacks, or the story could be set during Paul’s ongoing galactic war, potentially adapting elements from Dune Messiah.
The shocking imagery appears to depict battles only briefly described in Dune Messiah, such as those at Sembou, Molitor, and potentially Naraj, where a risky Stone Burner tactic was employed – a detail that will become significant later. The sheer violence and destruction highlight the incredible bravery and skill of the Fremen warriors. We see Stilgar, Paul Atreides’ loyal commander, leading an attack on a planet that resisted his rule as Emperor.
Paul isn’t the only Atreides returning – his sister, Alia, is also featured! Fans will remember Alia as a baby in Dune: Part Two, but she’s now grown up. The trailer shows Alia is the same age as she appeared in Paul’s previous vision, suggesting a significant time jump between the second and third films. Director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed this jump is around 17 years, longer than the 12 years that pass in the original novel.

Alia, like her brother, is the product of the Bene Gesserit’s careful breeding program and possesses remarkable physical and psychic abilities. However, when their mother, Jessica, consumed the Water of Life in Dune: Part Two, Alia was prematurely awakened and overwhelmed with the same flood of ancient memories. Whether she can cope with this remains to be seen, and it will be a central question for the events of Children of Dune.
Alia strongly supports her brother and actively promotes the religious movement surrounding Muad’Dib. She even takes charge of his empire when he’s away, as shown in a scene of the throne room. We see her praying with him before battles, offering blessings to his warriors before they fight. In a brief moment, someone with prayer beads passes Paul’s official signet ring to a person wearing a stillsuit – perhaps Paul himself, or a priest entrusting the ring to Alia for protection.
One of the most striking moments in the trailer is Alia standing on a temple balcony, performing religious ceremonies for the many pilgrims who have come to Arrakis to worship Paul. Because of her training in the Bene Gesserit ways, she can use the power of faith to help Paul maintain control.
The story of Dune Messiah isn’t just about the Atreides family gaining power. Several groups from the old empire want to stop Paul’s rule, which they see as oppressive. This leads to a secret plot formed by the Bene Gesserit, the manipulative Tleilaxu, and the influential Spacing Guild!

As a huge Dune fan, I was so excited to finally get a real glimpse of the Spacing Guild! We knew from the first movie they controlled all space travel and needed that spice melange to do it, but now, in the new film, we see one of their Navigators. It’s a really unsettling image – this huge, floating container holding Edric, the Navigator, inside. It’s brief, but definitely makes an impression!
Guild Navigators are humans drastically changed by prolonged exposure to spice gas, resulting in physical mutations that make them resemble fish. This spice exposure grants them a limited ability to see the future, allowing them to chart safe courses through space for massive Heighliner ships.
We also get our first glimpse of Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a character from the Tleilaxu, in the trailer for the movie. The Tleilaxu are a mysterious and controversial group introduced in Dune Messiah. They’re humans known for their advanced bioengineering, but they’re disliked throughout the galaxy because of their questionable methods.
The Tleilaxu are known for disturbing creations, including Face Dancers – beings that can change their appearance. Originally developed as a form of entertainment, these shapeshifters proved incredibly useful for spying and killing due to their ability to perfectly imitate anyone. In this story, Scytale isn’t simply using this disguise ability to help with the current plot; he’s also secretly working for the Tleilaxu and has his own hidden agenda.

The trailer shows the members of this secret group meeting on a huge spaceship belonging to the Spacing Guild. Irulan, who appeared in Dune: Part Two, leads the meeting. As you may recall, Paul married her at the end of that film—but it was only a marriage in name—to help him claim the throne, and she wasn’t pleased about it.
The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is the mastermind behind the plot in the book, but she isn’t shown in this trailer. Charlotte Rampling, who plays her, is listed in the trailer’s credits, suggesting she might still appear, possibly in a flashback.
The scheme against Paul unfolds in several ways. Irulan and the Bene Gesserit try to prevent Paul and Chani from having a child, hoping Irulan can bear Paul’s heir and allow the Bene Gesserit to control the powerful genes of the Kwisatz Haderach. They fear a child with Chani would introduce Fremen genetics, disrupting their carefully planned breeding program.
Edric, working with the Spacing Guild, helps conceal the conspiracy from Paul’s ability to see the future. The Guild Navigators also have limited foresight, which allows them to subtly change events and obscure Paul’s visions. Paul can’t directly witness what the Guild is doing in his predictions, but he can detect when their influence is missing from potential futures.
Finally, Scytale and the Tleilaxu complete the conspirators’ scheme. The Tleilaxu are known for creating Face Dancers, but also for Gholas – beings they grow from dead tissue. These aren’t simply clones or zombies; Gholas have no memories of their previous lives. The Tleilaxu can even genetically engineer new abilities and characteristics into these recreated bodies.

The plotters are planning to give Paul a gift he won’t be able to reject. And what is this gift? It’s a Ghola – a recreated being – of his closest friend and teacher, Duncan Idaho! Yes, you heard that right, Duncan is alive again!
In Dune: Part One, Duncan bravely rescued Paul by fighting and defeating nineteen Sardaukar soldiers before sacrificing himself. Now, a recreated version of Duncan, called Hayt, exists! After his death, the Tleilaxu obtained Duncan’s body and used their technology to grow him again. They also enhanced his mind, turning him into a Mentat – a human with incredible mental abilities similar to a computer – in addition to his already impressive skills as a swordsman.
Scytale and Edric are shown entering Paul’s palace, bringing Hayt as a present. Those plotting against Paul hope Hayt will disrupt his leadership. Many Fremen deeply distrust the Tleilaxu and view Paul accepting this creation of theirs as a betrayal. However, Paul is lonely and realizes Hayt is intended to harm him, so he decides to keep him nearby.
All of this creates a period of great upheaval within Paul’s empire. His authority is severely tested as he realizes the difficulties inherent in the systems that develop around strong, charismatic figures like himself. He faces opposition everywhere, even from within the Fremen community.
It seems like something straight from a story: Paul, along with his best soldiers and possibly Alia, are searching Arrakeen at night to stop a group of Fremen rebels. However, they encounter something unexpected – likely a Stone Burner – that proves to be more than they anticipated.
In the world of Dune, Stone Burners are incredibly powerful weapons. The ruling power, the Dune Imperium, strictly prohibits the use of atomic weapons against people or planets, with the punishment being total annihilation. In Dune: Part Two, Paul Atreides found a way around this rule by using his family’s atomics not against the Emperor’s soldiers, but directly on the shield wall itself – a crucial distinction.

In Dune Messiah, Lady Jessica is absent from the main story, enjoying a prolonged stay on Caladan with Gurney. However, it appears she’ll make a cameo in a flashback sequence with Paul on his home planet. Paul is shown with long hair, wearing his Atreides uniform, but with blue eyes caused by the Water of Life. Given Jessica’s appearance as a Reverend Mother – as she is at the conclusion of Dune: Part Two – this scene likely takes place shortly after Paul gains power.
The trailer shifts back to the story of Duke Leto and his lasting influence. This Dune series emphasizes the bond between fathers and sons. It appears that in Dune: Part Three, Paul continues to grapple with leading in a way that would make his father proud. His power and the strength of his Fremen army have grown beyond his control, leading Paul – and all of humanity – down a perilous path.
The trailer concludes with a compelling scene that appears to diverge from the plot of Dune Messiah and further develops Chani’s more significant role in these film adaptations. At the end of Dune: Part Two, Chani left Paul and disappeared into the desert. This trailer shows us Chani again, now looking tougher and more weathered from her time in the desert.

Chani appears to be facing off against two fellow Fremen, potentially indicating she’s involved in a conflict against Paul and his plans. The unusual part is that this confrontation is happening on top of a sandworm! The book Dune Messiah hints at a plot to steal a sandworm from Arrakis to control the spice trade, and it looks like the movie might show us that whole scheme unfolding in a large-scale action sequence.
Dune: Part Three hits theaters December 18, 2026.
