Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again is no longer trying to hide what it’s doing.
The creators of Season 2 have confirmed that the upcoming episodes will draw inspiration from figures like Donald Trump and the practices of ICE.
This follows the fact that the first season didn’t make it into the top 10 streaming shows, according to Nielsen data, even though it began with two episodes released at once on Disney+.

Marvel says the Trump and ICE comparisons are real
I’m really intrigued by what Entertainment Weekly is saying about Season 2. Apparently, it’s going to show Wilson Fisk tightening his control over New York, and his task force – the one meant to go after vigilantes – is operating in a way they’re comparing to ICE. It sounds like things are getting pretty intense and politically charged, which I’m definitely here for!
The show features scenes of people being arrested – often involving agents in black uniforms, surprise raids, and the use of unmarked vans to take them into custody. It depicts individuals being taken from the streets and held in cages.
Dario Scardapane, the show’s creator, said it became clear as they finished the season that the show was starting to reflect real-world events. He explained that during editing, the lines between fiction and reality began to blur.
Sana Amanat, an executive producer on the project, also supported this approach, describing the story as one about a powerful leader who exploits the system to harm vulnerable groups.

They even pointed to historical invasions and political strong-arming
Scardapane didn’t stop at Trump comparisons.
In an interview with EW, the director revealed that one restaurant raid was intentionally designed to resemble the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. He also explained that a particular kidnapping scene was inspired by the film Fruitvale Station.
He pointed out that authoritarian leaders tend to repeat historical patterns, citing examples like Nero, Pinochet, and Franco. This reveals a lot about the show’s approach – it’s not original, but rather based on established tropes.
It’s not just fans speculating – Marvel employees are now openly discussing and confirming the political themes within their work.

Season 1 already showed fans weren’t buying in
That’s the bigger problem for Marvel.
The first season of Daredevil: Born Again didn’t appear on Nielsen’s list of the top 10 most-watched streaming shows. This made it the first live-action Marvel series on Disney+ to miss the list, as reported by several entertainment news sources.
Disney initially claimed 7.5 million people watched the program within its first five days. However, Nielsen’s data revealed a different picture of how well it continued to attract viewers over time.
If a character already has a lot of fan support from the previous Netflix show, this is concerning. It’s particularly worrying because Marvel was really hoping Born Again would be a success.

Fans are worn out on the message-first approach
This is where Marvel keeps missing the point.
Viewers didn’t tune into Daredevil for another preachy superhero show. They were hoping for a compelling, realistic story with well-developed characters and the gritty, intense feel of the original series.
Marvel consistently tries to make its shows relevant to current events, but then seems shocked when viewers lose interest. This growing disconnect is becoming more obvious as viewership numbers on Disney+ for Marvel content decline and the overall excitement surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t what it once was.

Marvel is saying the quiet part out loud
The most telling part is that Marvel isn’t even pretending this is accidental anymore.
Okay, so here’s the thing – the people making this show are already talking up the whole storyline about Trump and ICE, even before we get to see a single episode. Look, I get that might get some buzz in entertainment news, but honestly, it feels like they’re pushing politics where a lot of us just want to escape with some entertainment. It could really turn off viewers who are already fed up with every show feeling like it has to weigh in on everything.
The second season arrives on Disney+ on March 24th. Marvel will soon discover whether focusing even more on its current themes will attract viewers or alienate them further.
