As a long-time fan of the Venom franchise, I must admit that my initial enthusiasm was somewhat dampened when the news about the upcoming film, Venom: The Last Dance, first broke out. After all, Venom: Let There Be Carnage didn’t quite live up to its predecessor in my opinion. And let’s not forget the box office blow that Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters (SSU) took with Madame Web earlier this year.
In April 2022, during CinemaCon, Sony Pictures revealed plans for a new movie titled Venom: The Last Dance. It was disclosed that Tom Hardy will be working alongside Kelly Marcel on the screenplay, and together they are also collaborating on the storyline for this film.
Pre-production started in February 2023, and now just a few weeks remain until the movie’s release.
To begin with, enthusiasm for the movie wasn’t particularly high due to the perception that Venom: Let There Be Carnage was not as strong as the initial film in the series. Furthermore, the poor performance of Madame Web at the box office this year has dampened fans’ excitement towards SSU productions.
Yet, the newly unveiled trailer has sprung a significant shock: it introduces Knull, one of Marvel Comics’ much-loved antagonists, for the first time in the third movie.
It appears that the anticipation for Knull’s movie has been revived, given its estimated opening of between $80 million and $120 million in domestic box office sales, placing it among this year’s largest debuts.
Initially released during the first weekends of October, the movies “Venom” (2018) and its sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), respectively, generated impressive earnings of $80.2 million and $90 million in their opening weekends. Although they started off differently, both films ultimately accumulated a domestic gross of $213.5 million, with “Let There Be Carnage” edging ahead of the original by a minuscule margin of $38,958.
2024 proved to be an exceptional year for superhero films, as the blockbusters starring Deadpool and Wolverine ruled the box office amidst increasing excitement.
In about a week’s time, we’ll see the debut of “Joker 2,” but its anticipation appears to be decreasing, mostly due to it being a musical and receiving unfavorable critiques up until now. On the other hand, “Kraven the Hunter” from SSU is set for release in December as well.
