Sarah Michelle Gellar has reacted to the news that Hulu has canceled the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, saying the cancellation was unexpected for both her and the show’s team.
In a recent interview with People, Gellar shared that she learned the show had been cancelled at a very surprising time – right before she was scheduled to appear at the SXSW Film & TV Festival for her new movie’s premiere. She admitted, “Nobody saw this coming,” and explained that even those closely involved with the project were caught off guard by the news.
The planned continuation of the series, initially called “New Sunnydale,” aimed to feature a new slayer while paying tribute to the original show. Filmmaker Chloé Zhao was heavily involved in developing it.
Gellar explained that internal disagreements were a key factor in the show’s cancellation. She shared that one executive involved with the project didn’t like the original series and openly admitted to never having watched it, even boasting about it. This created challenges from the start, particularly given the original show’s dedicated fanbase.
Zhao shared her thoughts with Variety and CNN, saying she wasn’t surprised by the recent news but still considered working on the project a valuable experience. She emphasized their commitment to the original show, stating, “Our priority was always to honor the story and its fans.”
Gellar expressed disappointment with how things unfolded, noting the timing of the decision was particularly difficult given where she was in her career. However, she emphasized that the show’s impact continues to endure. As she put it, ‘Buffy’ is timeless, and that legacy lives on for the people involved.
