My Old Ass Trailer: Aubrey Plaza Comes Face To Face Her Younger Version In Time-Travel Flick

As a lifestyle expert with a penchant for unique cinematic experiences, I must say that “My Old Ass” has piqued my interest. The concept of a young protagonist meeting her older self is not new, but the execution seems fresh and intriguing. The trailer, coupled with the impressive cast led by Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza, promises a compelling narrative that tackles relatable themes such as coming-of-age, family, love, and loss – topics that resonate deeply with my own life experiences.

In the preview for the movie titled “My Old Self,” which boasts a mix of seasoned and debut actors, we see 18-year-old character Elliott Labrant (Maisy Stella) engaging in a conversation with her wise counterpart portrayed by Aubrey Plaza. This interaction occurs after Elliott accidentally consumes psychedelic mushrooms.

The borderline sci-fi movie, situated in a lake town of Ontario, focuses on a character named Elliott, who is described as free-spirited. In this film, Elliott encounters her 39-year-old self. However, when Elliott’s older self starts providing warnings to her younger self, it becomes apparent that Elliott must reevaluate everything about her family, life, and relationships. This is according to the official synopsis.

This year, the movie had its premiere at Sundance to rave critiques. It offers a unique perspective on the maturing process in cinema, as demonstrated by the initial meeting and subsequent kiss between Elliott’s younger and older selves, followed by numerous phone conversations.

As someone well-versed in the intricacies of life, I’d like to share a piece of advice from a perspective of experience: Always look out for your younger self, offering guidance to navigate through challenging times. This is a theme that film director Meghan Park beautifully portrayed in her debut film, “The Fallout,” released in 2021. In this powerful production, Jenna Ortega plays a school girl who endures the trauma of witnessing a fatal shooting at her school. By understanding and empathizing with her struggles, we can help ourselves and others avoid similar early-life traumas.

The director shared with NBC News that while it wasn’t planned intentionally, both of her projects have a common focus on this particular theme. Reflecting on creating “The Fallout,” she expressed astonishment at the reality that American students encounter such horrifying incidents in their daily lives.

Regarding her latest movie, it wasn’t initially conceived around the theme of loss. Instead, it was centered on a sense of longing or reminiscence.

Stella, who portrayed younger Elliott in the movie, found it particularly impactful because she not only cherishes reminiscence but was finishing high school during filming, a time she was already feeling nostalgic about. She shared this sentiment with the media saying, “I’m very nostalgic. I felt nostalgia when I was still in the midst of things you typically become nostalgic about.

While reading the script for the first time, Plaza found herself shedding tears because the movie’s topic matched her preferences perfectly. “It’s the ideal type of film for me,” The White Lotus actress explained, “as it features an innovative, transportive aspect that encourages your imagination.” Yet, at its heart, it remains a down-to-earth and deeply human production.

My Old Ass was released in theaters on September 27.
