Now, it stands to reason that a feller who’s managed to accumulate a billion dollars or so ain’t likely done it by consistently makin’ poor choices. Seems simple enough, don’t it? But human nature bein’ what it is, we often look to these fellas for guidance, as if wealth automatically confers wisdom. I reckon there’s a bit of truth to that, but also a heap of humbug. Still, it’s worth a glance when men like Bill Ackman, Stanley Druckenmiller, Ken Griffin, and David Tepper all start lookin’ at the same stocks. They’ve a knack for sniffin’ out opportunity, though I suspect a bit of luck’s involved, too. Let’s have a look at what’s caught their fancy of late.
1. Alphabet
Google’s parent company, Alphabet (GOOG +1.00%) (GOOGL +1.11%), has been a favorite amongst these high rollers. Griffin, that shrewd operator, increased his stake by nigh on 40%, which is akin to addin’ a good-sized barn to an already substantial farm. Druckenmiller, bless his heart, went even further, boostin’ his position by a whopping 276.7%! That’s like findin’ a whole new gold mine in the backyard. Tepper, not to be left out, added another 28.9% to his holdings.
Now, Ackman, he’s a bit of a contrarian, trimmed his position by a mere 2.5%. A pittance, really. Still, it shows even these fellas aren’t always of one mind. But the general consensus, you see, was overwhelmingly positive. And I reckon there’s good reason for it. Alphabet’s Google Cloud is growin’ faster than a weed in July, and their Gemini AI model is consistently rankin’ high. They’ve integrated it into everything, and folks seem to be takin’ a shine to it.
But it ain’t just the here and now. Alphabet’s got a couple of wild cards up its sleeve. Waymo, their robotaxi venture, could be a real game-changer, if they can get it right. And Google Quantum AI, well, that’s a whole other kettle of fish. Quantum computin’ could be the next big thing, or it could be a lot of hot air. Time will tell, as always.
2. Amazon
Amazon (AMZN +1.93%) is the second largest holdin’ in Citadel Advisors’ portfolio, and Griffin’s a big fan. He increased his stake by a monstrous 336.2% – that’s like buyin’ the whole state of Texas! Ackman and Druckenmiller also jumped on the bandwagon, addin’ 65% and 68.8% respectively. They’re all bettin’ on the e-commerce and cloud giant, and I reckon they’ve got a point.
Tepper, though, he’s a bit different. He trimmed his Amazon position by 12.8%. Now, don’t go thinkin’ he’s soured on the stock. He’s just playin’ a different game, likely takin’ profits or reallocatin’ funds. It’s a complicated world, this Wall Street, and a feller needs to keep his wits about him.
I’m right there with these three billionaires on Amazon. The stock may not have kept pace with the S&P 500 (^GSPC +1.01%) lately, but the underlying business is still mighty strong. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is poised to benefit from the rise of agentic AI, and their efforts to speed up delivery and cut costs are payin’ off handsomely.
3. Meta Platforms
Ackman made a splash earlier this year with a hefty investment in Meta Platforms (META +2.32%). Tepper followed suit, increasin’ Appaloosa’s stake by 62.2%. They’re bettin’ on the future of social media, and I reckon they might be onto somethin’.
Druckenmiller, however, didn’t buy a share. And Griffin, well, he went against the grain, sellin’ off 59.2% of Citadel’s stake. Now that’s a contrarian move, if ever I saw one. It just goes to show you, even the smartest fellas can disagree.
I’m leanin’ towards Ackman and Tepper on this one. Meta’s family of apps reaches a global audience of 3.58 billion active daily users – that’s a lot of eyeballs, and advertisers are willin’ to pay a pretty penny to get their attention. They’re also an early leader in the smart glasses market, which could be a big deal in the years to come.
Will Meta’s efforts to develop artificial superintelligence (ASI) pay off? I couldn’t rightly say. It’s a long shot, to be sure. But I do expect their AI investments to boost profits, and when profits rise, share prices usually follow. That’s just the way of the world, and a feller can usually count on it.
